Mangaluru: Fishermen wilting under Goa fish ban - request government to rescue

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 10: The government of Goa has banned entry of fish from Karnataka coast into that state citing use of formalin as preservative although the fishermen here have been insisting that they have never used this chemical compound and tests have repeatedly proved that fish from here is not contaminated with formalin.

Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association had requested the food department of their state to lift the ban but the Goan government has stood firm on its stand. This has put the livelihood of the fishermen from coastal Karnataka, who are already reeling under multifarious problems, into jeopardy.

Since about a month, fishermen, businessmen from states bordering Goa, labourers etc have no work because of the ban. The fish industry of Karnataka has received a deadly blow. Karnataka government has also not done enough to respond to the problems and hold talks with Goan government to address the problem. The fishermen, truck owners and workers, and other people associated with fish trade have been driven to streets, and they look upon the state government to come to their rescue.

The state government, the fishermen and others associated with fishing allege, has been owning a discreet silence on the issue instead of extending a helping hand to the fishermen. There have been pleas to the government to discuss the issue with Goa government in a suitable forum and find a solution to the problem early. As the Goan government did not respond to the demand made by a meeting of fish traders held in Goa, the fishermen here expect Karnataka government to discharge its responsibility by talking to Goa government.

Satish Poojary Maravanthe, a fish trader from Goa, says that the Goan government is not prepared to even check whether the rumour about adding Formalin by Karnataka fishermen as preservative is true. The fact that Karnataka government too is not doing anything to mitigate their problem has complicated the issue, he rues.

Because of stoppage of truck loads of costly fish which used to reach Goa from here, the price of fish here has nosedived.

Join secretary of Karnataka State Lorry Owners Federation and president of Udupi district JD(S) minority unit, Mansoor Ibrahim Maravanthe, said that a memorandum has been submitted to Karnataka chief minister to make some efforts to provide justice to the fishermen from the state. He explained to the chief minister that the rumour about fish from Kerala having been treated with Formalin has delivered deadly blow to the Karnataka fishermen, which he said is a part of some devious ploy.

Malpe Fishermen's Association president, Satish Kunder, said that state fisherie department director would be visiting Udupi on November 12 during which the fishermen would be holding discussions with him on all the problems affecting the fishermen.

Instead of crying for Goa banning, our fishermen should be ready to release the fish into the local market with cutting off a bit of margin. They are not doing so. the fish rates seems to be the same in Mangalore fish market.

Goa has done well. When people play with human life due to greed , there should be zero tolerance. It is proved that most fish entering Goa was contaminated with Formalin.
Next should be fruits ripened with chemicals. I hope the government will soon bring rigorous imprisonment to the greedy monsters who cause cancer, Unfortunately no one can catch them with direct evidence.

Don't get me wrong, I love fish. However it is pathetic to see leaky tempos spraying fishy spray all over Mangalore.
    ೧. I guess swatcha Bharath and smart city concept does not apply to these fish sellers?
    2. There is utter lack of Civic sense . Goa has done the right thing by banning these. Authorities in Mangalore also should heavily fine those leaking vehicles across the city.
    3. I respect politicians who do try to be progressive. Madwaraj is in among these. Yet his measures to safeguard against fish famine were not appreciated by fishermen as it curtailed their greed.
    4. Formaldehyde afffair is a serious criminal offense. This liquid they store dead bodies in medical colleges. Formalin or formaldehyde is confirmed carcinogen and can or rather will cause cancer especially those who are already at risk.
Fisherfolk have to restore confidence and follow the rules.

Goans dont trust anyone south of their borders...

They know Udupi fishermen and others from Mogaveera community gave a royal haath to Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj by taking his financial assistance when they needed it from him, and ended up voting for a batta who only is interested in making strikes...

Why fish prices have not come down due to Goa ban? If they lift the ban then price will skyrocket for consumers in coastal Karnataka!

As there is a ban, fish is very cheap now in Mangalore. Govt and local muncipality should look at price caping for essential items like govts do in gulf specially during Ramadan

Ordinary Filipinos cannot buy apples and grapes and they never take their children to the place where these are sold, since these fruits are beyond their means. Same like that, we are not in a position to buy such fishes you like to relish.

But, see the other side, there are people who can buy these in tons , but due to their health, they cannot eat. This is the way of life. Let us be happy with what we have, and thank God, since we are far better than majority of Indians. Thank your mother, she seems to be managing family budget well.

I'll tell you guys - stop meat (beef) supply to Goa, their demand for fish will be renewed, ban lifted. You don't believe me ? Read the following :

    Quote
The coastal state is facing a beef shortage with traders suspending import of meat from Karnataka alleging harassment by cow vigilantes.
    Unquote

Well, this news is a bit old, I copy-pasted to tell you that Goa actually gets Beef supply from Karnataka.
