Mangalurean Rohina Bhandary killed in tiger shark attack in Costa Rica

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 3: In a terrible incident which happened at Costa Rica in Central America, Rohina Bhandary from the city died after a tiger shark attacked her in Pacific Ocean. The incident happened on Thursday November 30.

Rohina (49) was the granddaughter of I G Balakrishna Shetty. She had secured her MSc degree in finance from George Washington University. She had obtained Master of Business Management degree from Asian Institute of Management. She was a sales and marketting executive working in New York.

Rohina was the sister of Dr Nitin Bhandary from the city. She was on a tour of certain countries in the American continent along with some friends, when tragedy struck. She was enjoying scuba diving at Costa Rica when this unimaginable incident happened.

In this incident, a 26-year-old Costa Rican scuba diving guide who was guiding the group of which Bhandary was a member, was badly injured. The attack happened when the two were surfacing after the dive off Cocos island, which is about 480 km away from Costa Rica mainland.

Rohina was hauled out of the water after sustaining severe bites to both of her legs, Costa Rica’s environment ministry said.

"Upon reaching the surface, the attack on the tourist was already serious," the environment ministry said.

Park guards and medical personal vacationing on the island launched a frantic effort to treat her wounds.

A dive master also suffered a shark bite but those injuries were not life-threatening.

The instructor, who was conscious and in relatively stable condition, told officials that the shark attacked when his group was surfacing at the tail end of the dive.

    Very unfortunate and sad.
Costa Rica tourism has been honest in declaring the area safe? Some investigation is possible? Those waters have been known for agressive Sharks.

It is most unfortunate that Rohina Bhandari was killed by a tiger shark in Costa Rica. She went for fun which turned into a tragedy. May her soul rest in peace and sympathies to her loved ones. One doctor who was working with me in the same hospital in New York was killed in a similar way some many years back. These tiger sharks are deadly and can attack anybody without any warning.

God grant Shanthi to Rohina's soul. Lessons to be learnt. Assess the risk and take a decision. Temporary fun can turn into a tragedy. Safety first.
