Karkala, Sep 29: In a tragic incident on Tuesday afternoon, September 29, two young men who had joyfully gone to swim with friends lost their lives after drowning in the Swarna River at Hermunde, located in Hirgana village of Karkala taluk.

The deceased youths were identified as Bharat Poojary (29), a painter by profession, and Harshaan Acharya (23), both residents of Hirgana village.

Went for a swim on a holiday

As Bharat and Harshaan had the day off from work on Tuesday, they teamed up with three other friends in the afternoon to go bathing. Walking about two kilometres along a rugged, difficult path from Mangilaru in Hirgana, they made their way to the Hermunde River.

While enjoying a swim with their companions, Bharat and Harshaan ventured into deeper waters and, unable to swim, tragically drowned and breathed their last.

Because there was no motorable road leading directly to the incident site, fire service personnel had to trek roughly three kilometres on foot carrying their rescue gear. By the time they reached the spot, the bodies of both youths were trapped deep underwater. Subsequently, a team led by Fire Station Officer Sanjeev Devadiga, with the cooperation of locals, carried out continuous operations for over three hours to pull the sunken bodies from the water.

A young man's dream of a new home cut short by fate!

The late Bharat Poojary supported his family by working as a painter. Having dreamed of building his own house, Bharat had even commenced construction work. Having already reached the slab stage, he planned to host a house-warming ceremony in just a few months. However, due to the cruel twist of fate, Bharat has now left this mortal world.

Fire service personnel Roopesh, Suresh, Nithyananda, Dinesh, Muzammil, and driver Shivananda participated in the rescue operation.
