Mangaluru, Sep 29: A two-day refresher workshop for National Service Scheme (NSS) programme officers of the Mysuru division was organised at the YMK Auditorium of Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Commerce, Science and Management, Kuloor, Mangaluru, on September 22 and 23.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Department of Pre-University Education, NSS Cell Bengaluru, and Yenepoya Pre-University College, Jeppinamogaru.

State NSS coordinator Shivamadaiah, who presided over the inaugural programme, said the primary objective of NSS was to transform the energy of youth into national strength and utilise their talent and abilities for social transformation. He stressed the importance of equipping programme officers with complete knowledge of activities to be undertaken under NSS with the support of the Central and state governments and ensuring their effective implementation at the college level.

Premanath Shetty BA, district physical education project officer and nodal officer, Dakshina Kannada, inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. He said students should develop a spirit of service, creative thinking and a sense of responsibility to emerge as responsible citizens and contribute to building a stronger nation.

Ujwal Rodney Menezes, principal of Yenepoya Pre-University College, Jeppinamogaru, said life becomes meaningful through service. He said NSS provides a platform to promote environmental conservation, national integration and a spirit of cooperation while helping students develop personality and leadership qualities.

BGS College, Kavoor, principal Subrahmanya, Dakshina Kannada district NSS nodal officer Arun Kumar, Udupi district NSS nodal officer Jayashankar and Mysuru district NSS nodal officer Mahesh were present on the occasion.

State NSS coordinator Shivamadaiah felicitated Yenepoya Pre-University College Principal Ujwal Rodney Menezes for the support extended by the Yenepoya management towards organising the workshop. NSS programme officers Anoop and Akshatha Ayil were also honoured for their contribution to the successful conduct of the programme.

Yenepoya Pre-University College students Akeefa Lubna and Fathima Rifa led the prayer. Kannada lecturer Abdul Rahman welcomed the gathering, while Akshatha Ayil compered the programme and Udupi District NSS Nodal Officer Jayashankar proposed the vote of thanks.

The two-day workshop featured training sessions on various aspects of NSS. On the first day, Dr Vineeth Rai, former NSS Coordinator of Mangalore University, spoke on the history, objectives and role of NSS programme officers. Retired principal Narendra Badasheshi conducted a session on effective implementation of daily activities, while state NSS coordinator Shivamadaiah addressed accounting procedures.

Lion Dinesh, principal of Government Pre-University College, Nanjangud, conducted a session on management of annual special camps, while Yathiraj, lecturer and NSS programme officer at Padua Pre-University College, Mangaluru, provided training on PFMS management.

On the second day, Dakshina Kannada district nodal officer Seema Prabhu N conducted a session on managing the My Bharat portal. Somasekhar, principal of Sri Subrahmanyeshwara College, Subrahmanya, spoke on the role of programme officers and student participation in effective implementation of NSS at the college level.

Pradeep, NSS district nodal officer, Chikkamagaluru, addressed the organisation of special programmes under NSS, while Dr Jayashankar, Udupi district nodal officer, spoke on leadership qualities and their role in NSS.

Anoop, NSS Programme Officer of Yenepoya Pre-University College, Jeppinamogaru, conducted a session titled ‘Not Me, But You’ from the perspective of programme officers. K Annappa, programme officer of Vittal Pre-University College, addressed NSS and personality development.

The workshop concluded with an open interaction with state NSS coordinator Shivamadaiah, followed by a note of gratitude. The two-day refresher programme received appreciation from the participating NSS programme officers.
