Washington, Aug 22: California's State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising Diwali and expressing its "deepest respect" for Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora in the state and around the world.

House Resolution 137 recognises this year's Diwali festival on November 8 and encourages Californians to participate in the celebrations. Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra introduced the measure on August 13.

The resolution was adopted after being considered by the Assembly Committee on Rules and drew a broad group of co-authors from across the State Assembly.

The Hindu American Foundation announced the adoption in a social media post, saying, "California's Diwali Resolution has officially been ADOPTED!"

The organisation thanked Patel and Kalra for their leadership in recognising the significance of Diwali and advancing the resolution.

It also thanked Patel's office for consulting the foundation on the bill's language and said it was grateful for the opportunity to contribute.

The resolution describes Diwali as a festival of great significance to Indian Americans and South Asian Americans. It notes that Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains celebrate the festival annually across the United States and around the world.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, means "a row of lamps", according to the resolution. It describes the festival as one of the world's oldest holidays and says it brings families, friends and communities together.

The document highlights generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection as central elements of the celebration.

It says the lamps symbolise "the defeat of darkness and the victory of light" and recognises Diwali as an important occasion for families to gather and participate in traditions that strengthen a sense of community.

According to the resolution, different Diwali traditions represent the triumph of good over evil and carry themes of overcoming struggles, embracing positivity and humility, and maintaining kindness despite personal challenges.

The measure notes that Diwali will be celebrated this year across the Indian American and South Asian American diaspora. For many communities, the festival also marks the beginning of a new year.

"For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth, and happiness," the resolution states.

The Assembly also said the festival provides an opportunity for reflection and underscores the importance of wisdom, kindness and transformation.
