Karkala, Jul 11: A major fire broke out on Friday at the waste disposal unit located at Kariyakallu in Karkala.

The blaze, which initially appeared minor, spread across the entire facility within a short time. Old waste materials and recyclable used machinery stored at the unit were completely gutted. The loss is estimated to run into several lakh rupees.

Personnel of the Karkala Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot immediately after the fire was noticed and assisted in the firefighting operation. The operation was led by fire station officer Chandrashekhar, with Hariprasad, driver Sridhar, and staff members Rupesh, Mujambir, Ganesh, Dinesh, Bhimappa and Basavaraj Patil taking part.

The firefighting operation continued till night and lasted for more than ten hours. Owing to the intensity of the fire and the circulation of air within the heaps of waste, firefighters have been making strenuous efforts to bring the blaze completely under control.

The exact cause of the fire will be known only after an investigation. Officials of the local administration and the concerned departments have visited the site and are conducting an inspection.
