Udupi, Jul 4: The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on Friday, July 3, granted conditional bail to Congress leader Amrit Shenoy, who had been sentenced to three years' imprisonment for wilfully disobeying an order passed by the District Consumer Commission.
Taking into account Shenoy's health condition, the State Commission granted him bail on the condition that he deposits Rs 1 lac and furnishes a surety.
The case originated from a consumer complaint filed by Santosh Pai before the Udupi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. After hearing the matter, the Commission directed Amrith Shenoy to execute the registration of Flat No 304 in Voyager Apartment in favour of the complainant. Alternatively, he was ordered to refund Rs 27.20 lac along with 9 per cent annual interest.

As Amruth Shenoy failed to comply with the order, Santosh Pai initiated an execution case before the District Consumer Commission.
During the execution proceedings, the Commission held that Amrith Shenoy had wilfully disobeyed its order, constituting an offence punishable.
On June 24, the Udupi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission sentenced Amrith Shenoy to three years of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lac. The Commission further ruled that if the fine was not paid, he would have to undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment.
Following the conviction, the Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has now granted him conditional bail pending further proceedings.
