Puttur, Jun 27: A logo designed by Kannada artist K Ram Prasad from Puttur has been selected by the Central government for its VBG Ramji Scheme.

Ram Prasad had submitted his logo design in response to a nationwide competition announced by the Centre. The selected logo will be officially unveiled at a function in New Delhi on June 29. On the occasion, Ram Prasad will also be felicitated and presented with a cash award of Rs 50,000.

The Central government had invited artists from across the country to design a logo for the VBG Ramji Scheme. More than 7,000 entries were received from artists nationwide. Ram Prasad, son of Mallesh Acharya and Anuradha K of Puttur, submitted his design, which was selected around one-and-a-half months later.

His logo will now serve as the official identity of the VBG Ramji Scheme, introduced by the Central government as the new version of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Sharing his experience, Ram Prasad said he had never expected his design to be selected.

The Central government had invited everyone to take part in the logo competition. He saw the announcement online. March 30 was the last date for submission, and he spent the final week working on different concepts. Before designing the logo, he studied the objectives and nature of the VBG Ramji Scheme. He created nearly 20 designs, but none satisfied him. By then, the deadline had passed and nearly 5,000 entries had already been submitted, so he gave up.

Later, on April 1, he found that the deadline had been extended by four days. That renewed his enthusiasm. He started designing again and finally came up with one he liked. He submitted it at the last moment on April 4. He had no expectation that it would be selected, he said.

Explaining his creative process, Ram Prasad said every logo began with a strong concept.

Before creating any logo, one had to develop the concept and prepare illustrations that reflected it. Sometimes, more than 20 designs had to be made before reaching the final one. The design was then simplified and refined. Often, the best idea emerged at the very last moment, making the earlier illustrations irrelevant. He had experienced this many times, and the same happened in this case too, he said.
