Minor girl's suicide: Police commissioner questions double standards on justice

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 27: City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has said that the accused, Manish Poojary, a native of Ganjimath, who was allegedly responsible for the suicide of a minor girl, was arrested on the very day the incident took place.

In a statement, the police commissioner said DNA evidence is available in the case and that it would play a crucial role in securing punishment for the accused. He added that the police are continuing their investigation.

Referring to reactions from certain sections of society, Sudheer Kumar Reddy questioned what he described as a fundamental contradiction in the way criminal cases are responded to.

"Some sections are raising their voice for justice for the girl. However, there is a fundamental contradiction in the way criminal cases are reacted to. When the accused belongs to another community, there is an immediate demand for justice. But when the accused belongs to one's own community, why is there silence? Such outrage reflects communal sensitivity rather than genuine concern for victims. If we are truly committed to justice, all accused must be viewed through the same standard. Crime is a universal problem, and no community is exempt from the reality that criminals exist everywhere," the commissioner stated.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the suicide of the pregnant minor girl from Katipalla has gathered pace. In connection with the case, police have taken a youth into custody and intensified their investigation, collecting significant evidence.

The minor girl had allegedly died by suicide on June 24 after leaving behind a death note detailing the incident she had faced. She reportedly took the extreme step while her parents were away at work.

Police sources said DNA evidence supporting the investigation has been obtained. The police commissioner also disclosed that some members of the group associated with the girl had links to a drug network. Police are continuing their investigation from multiple angles.

Very sad to hear this that girl suicided when Parents were absent. Two lives are gone.Baby and girls too.Whether Parents knew that girl is pregnent? Why didnt she tell to them ?Again community will not accept it when girl is not married. Here my opinon is when such conditions are there ,better not brake pregnency but whatever happend accept let het deliver and settle things afterwards.Instead of killing a baby because soceity doesnt accept.Parents should have advice girl or accept it.What Police said is true. May her soul rest in peace.Parents lost their child.

This behaviour we have learnt from our leaders sir. They make su ka sukurunde when they have an opportunity to gain attention, and also downplay or challenge big crime if it suits them. Since that script worked all these years, people have accepted that as a norm. Mangalore soceity is polarized, it goes without saying. Life lost of other communities doesn't hurt us, but social standing lost of our own communities becomes monumental. We are raising our children with this poison. thank you for openly saying this, drugs, bad influence, unmonitored and irresponsible academic work is partly to blame. Marks and visibility alone matter to institutions, no moral build.

Strongly support the Police Commissioner's statement. Criminals have no religion or community. I urge everyone including members of the accused's own community to support the investigation instead of defending the accused. The priority must be justice for the minor victim and her grieving family not protecting anyone based on community.
