Kasargod, Jun 27: In a touching example of communal harmony and humanity, Kasargod zilla panchayat (ZP) member Irfana Iqbal performed the last rites of a 64-year-old Hindu man, Narayana, a resident of Chigurupade near Manjeshwar, who succumbed to cancer.
Setting aside barriers of religion and politics, Irfana Iqbal stood by the deceased as a family member and ensured that his final rites were conducted according to Hindu traditions.

About a month ago, Narayana was found in a miserable condition in the veranda of a shop, without food or proper care. Acting on information provided by ward member Sheriff Cheenala, Irfana visited the spot and informed the district collector and the district medical officer. Following their directions, volunteers of the Uppala Sheikh Sayyid Foundation administered first aid before shifting Narayana to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
Despite undergoing intensive medical care, Narayana passed away on Thursday due to cancer.
Hospital authorities informed the Manjeshwar police about his death. However, none of his family members came forward to claim the body. Although he is survived by two wives, children and sisters, they reportedly declined to receive the body and instead submitted a consent letter authorising zilla panchayat member Irfana Iqbal to perform the funeral. The consent letter was subsequently handed over to the medical college hospital authorities.
Following the formalities, Narayana's body was brought by ambulance to the public crematorium at Cherugoli in Uppala, where the last rites were conducted in accordance with Hindu customs. Irfana Iqbal herself lit the funeral pyre.
Social workers Riyaz Pilathara, Mehmood Kaikamba and others extended their support during the funeral.
Irfana Iqbal, who is the chairperson of the Development Standing Committee of the Kasargod zilla panchayat and a leader of the District Women's League, is also the founder of the Sheikh Sayyid Old Age Home in Uppala, which provides shelter and care to around 50 elderly people abandoned by their families. Along with her husband, Iqbal, she has been actively involved in various social service initiatives.
