Sharad Pawar urges revision of farm loan waiver rules, calls for consensus within INDIA bloc

Baramati, June 8: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Monday called for changes to the eligibility conditions attached to the Maharashtra government's Rs 36,585-crore farm loan waiver programme, arguing that procedural restrictions should not prevent deserving farmers from receiving relief.

Speaking to reporters in Baramati, Pawar advocated a constructive approach toward government policies, stressing that shortcomings in welfare schemes should be addressed through dialogue and reform rather than outright opposition.

Referring to the recently announced loan waiver initiative, he said that while the government's intention may be beneficial, several conditions attached to the scheme have created obstacles for potential beneficiaries. According to Pawar, democratic systems function best when policymakers remain open to feedback and corrections that improve implementation.

He urged the state leadership to engage with the relevant authorities and modify provisions that could limit the scheme's effectiveness. Instead of rejecting the policy because of its flaws, Pawar argued, efforts should focus on ensuring that eligible farmers can access the intended benefits without unnecessary complications.

The remarks come amid discussions surrounding the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Farm Loan Waiver Scheme, which is expected to benefit more than 55 lakh farmers across Maharashtra and facilitate the clearance of land records for nearly 17 lakh cultivators.

However, the programme includes a number of exclusion criteria. Under the current framework, serving and former ministers, Members of Parliament, legislators, local body representatives and several categories of government employees are not eligible. Individuals receiving government salaries or pensions above a specified threshold, employees of public sector entities, cooperative institutions and sugar factories, as well as regular income-tax payers with significant non-agricultural earnings, have also been excluded from the scheme.

Pawar also voiced concern over the worsening agricultural situation in parts of the state. He revealed that an expert team from the Vasantdada Sugar Institute had conducted field assessments and submitted a report highlighting extensive damage to banana and sugarcane crops.

According to him, scientists who inspected the affected regions found substantial losses and have already submitted recommendations. He noted, however, that implementing corrective measures ultimately rests with the authorities responsible for policy execution.

Turning to national politics, Pawar commented on the ongoing deliberations within the INDIA opposition alliance. He described the gathering in New Delhi as a review meeting aimed at assessing the coalition's future course and strengthening coordination among its constituent parties.

Pawar indicated that further consultations among senior leaders are expected within the next week or two to develop a common strategy. He expressed confidence that differences, if any, could be resolved through discussion and consensus-building.

Highlighting the need for unity, he emphasised that alliance partners should avoid adopting extreme positions that could create divisions within the coalition. He noted that Supriya Sule was representing his party at the meeting and said the alliance leadership would evaluate the discussions before deciding on the next steps.

With no major nationwide electoral contests expected in the immediate future, Pawar underscored the importance of maintaining cohesion among opposition parties and focusing on long-term political strategy rather than short-term disagreements.

His comments reflect a broader effort within the opposition camp to preserve unity, strengthen coordination and address issues affecting farmers and rural communities while preparing for future political challenges.
