New York, Sep 9: Ben Shelton produced a sensational performance to defeat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a marathon five-set thriller and reach the semi-finals of the US Open in the latest-finishing match in the tournament's history.

Shelton prevailed 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) in a gripping contest at Arthur Ashe Stadium that began at 11.05 pm on Tuesday and ended at 3.33 am on Wednesday.

The victory sets up an all-American semi-final clash between Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, raising hopes of a first American men's Grand Slam champion since 2003.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz had entered the contest with an unbeaten 13-0 record against American men in major tournaments. However, Shelton rose to the occasion and battled through an intense contest to pull off one of the biggest victories of his career.

Speaking after the match, Shelton credited the New York crowd for helping him find the energy to continue during the gruelling encounter.

“For me, it's always about the people in the crowd,” Shelton said, thanking his coaches, family, friends and supporters who remained at the stadium until the early hours.

He said the chants and support from the New York crowd kept him going through the dramatic final stages of the match.

Shelton also joked about his family members having to report to work just hours after staying up to witness his historic victory.

“To be here in front of you guys tonight is an absolute honour. Sharing the court with Carlos is an absolute honour, and I cherish every moment I have out here,” he said.
