Mumbai police forms SIT to probe fake birth certificate racket involving foreign nationals

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, May 5: Mumbai Police on Tuesday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged issuance of fake birth registration certificates to illegal foreign nationals, following revelations of large-scale irregularities.

A senior officer said preliminary findings indicate that a significant number of such certificates were fraudulently obtained, raising serious concerns over misuse of official records.

The SIT will be headed by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) and include the Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Branch), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection), Crime Branch, along with other officials.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, in a post on X, expressed gratitude to Police Commissioner Deven Bharti for setting up the SIT to investigate the matter.

The development comes in the wake of an internal probe conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which uncovered major violations in the birth and death registration system. The report revealed that nearly 87,000 corrections made between 2024 and 2026 were processed outside the mandatory registration system, using outdated procedures.

The BMC inquiry has recommended suspension of a civic official, while further investigations are underway to identify those involved and fix accountability.
