Mangaluru, Apr 23: In a bid to curb traffic rule violations, especially overspeeding on highways passing through the city and its outskirts, the police department has already implemented several measures, including surveillance cameras. Taking it a step further, laser-based speed gun cameras have now been introduced, tightening monitoring of vehicle movement.
The use of this device comes amid a rise in accident cases. Speed limits and traffic signboards have been installed on National Highways 66 and 73. Accident-prone black spots have also been identified and marked with signboards. To control overspeeding on major roads, traffic police have now adopted advanced ‘laser track’ speed gun camera technology. Vehicles moving on roads are monitored through these cameras, and e-challans with photographic evidence are issued against violators.

The device uses laser beams directed at vehicles to instantly calculate their speed. If a vehicle exceeds the prescribed limit or violates traffic rules, details such as vehicle image, registration number, time, and speed are automatically recorded. Video evidence is also captured, providing strong proof for imposing fines. One of the key features of this device is its ability to detect speeds of vehicles even from a distance. It is more accurate compared to handheld speed guns.
In accident-prone areas, police personnel themselves operate these devices mounted on tripods to check speed. Vehicles exceeding the limit are tracked on the spot, and penalty messages are sent to drivers. The device helps in registering cases with concrete evidence. According to traffic police, it is very difficult for violators to escape detection using this system.
