Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Fr Melwin J Pinto SJ, Pro-Chancellor of St Aloysius University, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions, and Vice President of Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES), passed away on Friday, April 10. He was 62.

Born in 1963, Fr Melwin completed his school and college education at St Aloysius and joined the Jesuit order on June 20, 1981.

He held an MA in English, a Master’s in Education, and a diploma in psychology and counselling, in addition to a diploma in school administration.

He was ordained as a Jesuit priest on April 14, 1997. He served as headmaster at St Joseph’s Primary School and High School in Hassan between 1996 and 1999, before founding St Joseph’s Indian PU College, where he served as principal until 2007.

He later served as headmaster of St Aloysius High School, Mangaluru, from 2007 to 2011 and as principal of St Joseph’s PU College, Hassan, until 2012.

Fr Melwin had also worked with Vatican Communications and Radio in Rome on its English desk for Asia and Indian languages.

He served as superior and director of Fatima Retreat House, Valencia, for a period of two years from May 2017, before being appointed as superior of the Jesuit study home ‘Vidyaniketan’ in Dharwad.

Colleagues and students remember Fr Melwin as an intellectually deep yet remarkably humble individual. Known for his radiant smile and gentle demeanor, he was celebrated for his insightful homilies and his unique ability to make everyone he encountered feel respected and important.

The St Aloysius community and the Jesuit province have expressed deep mourning over the loss of a leader who balanced professional excellence with a profound, soft-spoken kindness.

Fr Melwin's mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at St Aloysius College chapel, Mangaluru, from 10 am to 2 pm and from 2.30 to 3.30 pm at Divine Mercy Church, Fathima Retreat House, and at the Mass at 3.30 pm on Monday, April 13, followed by burial in Jesuit Cemetery, Mangaluru.

Shocked to hear that dear Fr Melwin has passed away. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few months ago for a SACAA event. The day before the ceremony, I had visited him at the residence for what I intended to be a brief hello. Instead, Fr Melwin kindly kept me entertained in deep discussion for almost two hours on mission work in Bihar, development, and politics. It was refreshing to hear him speak of how he involved the youth in church activities and wanted their opinions on improving systems. His genuine kindness and vision for the future thoroughly impressed me. It only took a few minutes to know that he was truly a gem of a person. My condolences to his grieving family and to the Jesuit community.

Dear Rev Fr Melwyn. You left many orphaned, rather too early which Noone expected. Fr Melwyn was a great personality and recently I had the privilege to meet him at the ALUMNI Association day at St Aloysius. He explained the various upcoming projects of the institution and obviously had still had many dreams to fulfil. During the get together, he met all of us personally along with Fr Martis and we exchanged some pleasant connections. His homilies and sermons are one of the best I should say, notwithstanding his oratory, exuberance and the fluent English. He connected with the young with compassion and humility. His untimely passing away is a big shock and feel very difficult to fill that void and vacuum. May his soul get perpetual light from Almighty and may his smiling face eternally encourage the future generations. He left an indelible image in Aloysius institute and sure his legacy will continue in the corridors of this great institute. It would have been a pleasure to see hom shine on 150th anniversary of Aloysius, but it was not to be. We meet to part and part to meet. Goodbye Fr as you leave your footprints in our lives. Condolences to family.

Today is a deeply sad day as I mourn the loss of a very dear friend and classmate, Fr. Melwin Pinto SJ. Fr. Melwin was not only an exceptional Jesuit priest, but also an inspiring educator and visionary leader who dedicated his life to shaping minds and nurturing values. As Pro-Chancellor of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, and Rector of the Aloysius Institutions, he touched countless lives with his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to service. To me, however, he was much more — a close friend whose warmth, simplicity, and genuine care for others made a lasting impression. He had a rare gift of making people feel seen, heard, and valued. His life was a testament to faith in action — lived quietly, humbly, and meaningfully. While his passing leaves a profound void, his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, dear Melwin. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. My heartfelt prayers and condolences to his family, the Jesuit community, and all who mourn his loss.

I am deeply shocked and heartbroken to hear about the passing of my childhood friend, Fr. Melwin. It is hard to believe that he is no more. Melwin, my brother Lesley, and I grew up together, sharing some of the most beautiful and carefree days of our lives. We went to church together, played cricket together, and spent countless hours just being kids, building memories that will now stay with me forever. I still vividly remember one day, on our way to church, when Melwin announced that he was joining the seminary. With the innocence of childhood, both Lesley and I immediately said that if he became a priest, we too would follow. Years later, he reminded us of that moment. By then, both of us were already married. I laughed and told him, “You became a Father… and we too became fathers.” He would fondly recall this story in his sermons and share it with many, spreading smiles wherever he went. That was Melwin, full of warmth, humor, faith, and a deep sense of purpose. Today, I feel an immense void. I am shocked to my core and struggling to come to terms with this loss. My heartfelt condolences to his siblings Stephen, Ivy, Vivi, Vinaya, all the priests, students, and his near and dear ones. May God give you strength in this difficult time. Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will always remain in my heart. Loy, Savita, Elroy & Elwin

With a very heavy heart, I learnt of the passing of the beloved priest, Fr. Melwin. To me, he was not just a respected priest, but a true friend, advisor, and guide. His kindness, wisdom, and ever-willing spirit to help, despite his demanding schedule, touched my life in a very special way. He always made time, always listened, and always guided with compassion and humility. What makes this even more personal is that he took the time to meet me on the 27th of March, 2026, despite his extremely tight schedule, and guided me in several ways regarding my educational programs. That gesture, in the midst of everything, speaks volumes about the kind of person he was - selfless, caring, and deeply committed to others. His passing leaves a deep void, but his life and legacy of faith, service and love will continue to inspire me always. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the entire Jesuit congregation, his family members, especially his brother Steven and the many friends and admirers during this time of profound loss. Rest in peace, dear Fr. Mel. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered. It is our loss, but a great gain for Heaven, as our Lord, Mama Mary, and all the Saints and Angels must be rejoicing at your arrival. Please pray for all of us, Fr. Mel. Ronald Olivera (Padukone)

A Beacon of Hope (In Loving Memory of Father Melwyn Pinto) Verse 1 On a quiet April evening, At three fifty-eight today, A light that shone so brightly, Was gently called away. In the halls of old Aloysius, Where young hearts learned to grow, You planted seeds of wisdom, More than words could ever show. Chorus Oh Father, beacon of hope, A shepherd strong and true, A friend, a guide, a teacher, The world was blessed through you. Though tears now fall like rain, And hearts feel torn apart, Your light will live forever, In every grateful heart. Verse 2 You taught beyond the classroom, You shaped both mind and soul, With kindness as your language, And love your only goal. No boundaries of religion, No walls of race or creed, You saw in every student, A promise, not a need. Chorus Oh Father, beacon of hope, A shepherd strong and true, A friend, a guide, a teacher, The world was blessed through you. Though tears now fall like rain, And hearts feel torn apart, Your light will live forever, In every grateful heart. Bridge A soldier of God so faithful, With courage calm and wise, You walked this earth in grace, Now you walk in paradise. The echoes of your laughter, Still linger in the air, In every life you’ve touched, We feel your presence there. Final Chorus Oh Father, beacon of hope, Your legacy won’t fade, In every life you lifted, In every prayer you made. Though heaven called you home, Too soon for us to bear, We’ll carry on your mission, With love beyond despair. Outro Rest now, gentle shepherd, Your work on earth is done, But in a thousand hearts, Your light will live on… on… on…

On March 25, I had the privilege of spending time with Rev. Fr. Melwin Pinto SJ. We met at 7:00 AM at Father Muller Medical College Hospital while undergoing our executive health check-ups. As we moved through the various clinical evaluations, the intervals provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect. We reminisced about our undergraduate days at St. Aloysius, reflecting on the journey our lives had taken since graduation. It felt like a profound "flashback" through our shared history. During these breaks, Fr. Melwin shared his vision for the future of alumni associations and sought my suggestions on various initiatives. He spoke in detail about the Jesuit Volunteers group, noting that the topic had been discussed extensively at the recent Superiors and Consultors (Dow) meeting. He also outlined an impressive blueprint for the development of St. Joseph’s University (SJU). We remained together until the final stage of the day: the physician's review. Fr. Melwin was called in first. When he emerged, he appeared visibly disturbed. He looked at me and spoke these parting words: "Clement, I am going; I have lots of work to complete." We will certainly miss u fr RIP
