Tech Layoffs in India signal shift beyond over hiring, AI impact grows

Mum, Apr 4: Layoffs in India’s technology sector have once again come into focus, with job cuts reported across global tech giants, IT services firms, and startups, pointing to a deeper transformation within the industry.

Companies such as Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft have announced workforce reductions impacting their India operations. In the IT services segment, firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys are witnessing what industry insiders describe as “silent layoffs,” including delayed onboarding and workforce rationalisation.

Startups are also recalibrating, with companies such as Zepto trimming their workforce amid changing business conditions.

Industry experts say the current trend is not merely a correction of aggressive hiring seen during the post-pandemic boom but reflects a broader structural shift. According to Murali Vivekanandan, the sector is entering a new phase where resilience is being redefined, with artificial intelligence playing a growing role.

“As AI capability improves, companies that leverage it deeply will thrive, while others may face disruption,” he said, indicating that automation could reduce demand for repetitive and process-driven roles.

This transformation is also reshaping how companies operate. Vivek Khemani noted that the industry is moving from traditional labour-intensive models to more output-driven frameworks powered by technologies like generative AI.

“The IT sector is transitioning towards ‘services as software’, where productivity gains mean fewer people may be required for the same output,” he said.

The nature of layoffs is also evolving. Reports indicate that some companies, including Oracle, have informed employees about job cuts through early morning automated emails, reflecting a more system-driven approach to workforce management.

Experts emphasise that layoffs are being driven by a combination of factors, including overhiring, economic pressures, and the increasing adoption of AI, signalling a long-term shift in the structure of the technology industry.
