Amazon to invest up to $50 billion to boost AI, supercomputing for US government

Washington, Nov 25: Amazon has announced a massive investment of up to $50 billion to expand artificial intelligence and supercomputing infrastructure for U.S. government clients through Amazon Web Services (AWS), marking one of the biggest cloud commitments ever made for the public sector.

The project, expected to begin in 2026, will add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of AI and high-performance computing capacity across AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret and AWS GovCloud regions. Amazon plans to build advanced data centers equipped with next-generation compute and networking technologies.

AWS currently serves over 11,000 U.S. government agencies, with cloud regions classified by increasing levels of data sensitivity. The fresh investment aims to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge AI tools within federal systems.

Tech giants such as OpenAI, Alphabet and Microsoft are already investing heavily in AI infrastructure, pushing demand for massive computing power. One gigawatt of power is enough to supply roughly 750,000 U.S. households, highlighting the scale of Amazon’s expansion.

“This investment removes the technology barriers that have held government back,” said AWS CEO Matt Garman. Amazon has not yet disclosed the full spending timeline.

Under the new initiative, U.S. federal agencies will gain access to AWS’ full suite of AI offerings, including Amazon SageMaker for model training and customisation, Amazon Bedrock for deploying models and agents, and foundation models such as Amazon Nova and Anthropic Claude.

Officials expect the expanded capacity to help federal departments build tailored AI systems and reduce operational costs. The move also comes amid intensifying global competition, with the U.S. and China racing to strengthen their positions in the fast-growing AI ecosystem.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
