Alcaraz cruises past Tarvet to reach Wimbledon third round with 20th straight win

London, Jul 3: Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the third round at Wimbledon with a commanding straight-sets victory over British wildcard Oliver Tarvet, dispatching the 21-year-old qualifier 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 under the bright lights of Centre Court on Wednesday.

Just two days after being pushed to the brink in a five-set opener against Fabio Fognini, Alcaraz looked back in championship form—confident, composed, and crushing the ball with precision. The reigning Wimbledon champion needed just over two hours to dismantle Tarvet, breaking serve six times and hammering 37 winners in a performance that underlined his growing dominance on grass.

Ranked world No. 733 and making his Grand Slam debut, Tarvet had captivated home fans with a spirited first-round win. But against the second-seeded Spaniard, the gap in class was evident. Still, Tarvet showed glimpses of potential—particularly with a few dazzling passing shots in the second set—but Alcaraz’s relentless tempo left him with little breathing room.

The win marks Alcaraz’s 20th consecutive match victory and extends his Wimbledon winning streak to 16, spanning three editions. With 31 career wins on grass now under his belt, he continues to rewrite the record books—having already become the fastest player in the Open Era to reach 30 wins on the surface after his first-round triumph.

Alcaraz is now chasing an extraordinary slice of history: he’s aiming to become only the second man, after Bjorn Borg, to complete the French Open–Wimbledon double in back-to-back years. He’s also within striking distance of a rare hat-trick—three consecutive Wimbledon titles—a feat achieved by only four men in the Open Era.

Up next for the 21-year-old is a third-round clash with either Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime or Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, as his title defence gathers momentum. If his second-round form is any indicator, the road to dethroning Alcaraz at SW19 will be steep.
