Mumbai, Jun 14: A 22-year-old woman from Andheri fell victim to an online work-from-home scam after being lured by the promise of a short-term data entry job with a Rs 15,000 payout. Instead of receiving payment, the woman was threatened and forced to pay Rs 10,000 to the fraudster.
According to the complaint filed at Amboli Police Station, the woman received a call on May 27 from an unknown number. The caller, posing as a representative of a company named Infotech, offered her a four-day data entry assignment to be done from home. Enticed by the convenience and pay, she accepted.
After completing the task within the stipulated time, she was told her work contained multiple errors. The caller then allegedly threatened to file a police case against her and demanded Rs 10,000 to ‘settle’ the issue. Fearing legal trouble, the woman transferred the amount.
It was only after informing her parents that she realized she had been deceived. A police complaint was promptly lodged.
Amboli Police have registered a case under Sections 66(a) and 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, and Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations are underway to trace the unidentified accused.
