Sullia, Sep 6: Police have taken into custody a man who allegedly stabbed his wife and mother-in-law at Anavugundi near Kanavu in Peruvaje village on Sunday afternoon before fleeing into a nearby forest.

The accused has been identified as Ganesh, a resident of Anavugundi. His wife Vinutha and mother-in-law Kusuma sustained serious injuries in the incident and have been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru.

According to preliminary information, Ganesh, who was reportedly staying mostly at his wife's house, had come to his house at Anavugundi along with Vinutha and some relatives from Bellare in an auto on September 6.

After spending around half an hour at the house, Ganesh, his wife, mother-in-law, son and relatives were reportedly leaving for his wife's house.

It is alleged that after they reached the road, Ganesh attempted to stab his wife Vinutha with a knife. Kusuma allegedly intervened, following which she sustained serious injuries. Vinutha was also allegedly stabbed during the incident.

Ganesh's son and other relatives reportedly fled from the spot in fear. After carrying out the alleged attack, Ganesh escaped towards a forest near his house.

On receiving information about the incident, Bellare police launched a search operation to trace the accused. Ganesh was later found in the forest during the evening and taken into custody.

The exact motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Bellare police are continuing their investigation.
