Puttur, Apr 28: A devastating fire engulfed a home in Mata near Uppinangady taluk on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the destruction of household items and the house itself, with losses estimated in lakhs of rupees.

The house belonged to Asmam, a resident of Mata, who is currently working overseas. At the time of the incident, his wife Kausare had locked the house and gone to the market with their children. Shortly after her departure, smoke was noticed emanating from inside the house. Local residents Siddique, Anif, U T Fayaz, and gram panchayat member Abdul Fayaz attempted to extinguish the fire, but their efforts were in vain. They promptly alerted the fire service personnel in Puttur, who arrived and conducted an hour-long operation to extinguish the flames.

Upon learning of the incident at the Uppinangady bus stand, where she was en route to Mangaluru, Kausare rushed back to find her home completely gutted.

According to Fire Service Officer Shankara, the fire reduced household items such as the refrigerator, washing machine, furniture, high-end clothes, and house records to ashes.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical short circuit. The house, constructed just a few years ago, fell victim to the sudden blaze.
