Udupi, March 19: Udupi district police conducted a special “Operation Sunset” on Saturday, March 18 in the evening between 8 pm and 11 pm.
 
As a part of this special operation, special teams comprising all officers and staff were formed and check posts were opened in important and sensitive areas and vehicles were checked thoroughly. Cases were registered under the Karnataka Police Act against persons causing public nuisance.

Action was taken against the sellers of tobacco and its products in the affected areas along with raids conducted on shops selling e-cigarettes.

As part of this special operation, three persons were arrested who were in possession of ganja and small quantity of OA. Also, during the vehicle inspection, a person who was transporting 45 liters of illegal liquor was also arrested and a case was registered.

Sixty habitual offenders/accused involved in old theft and related cases were screened through finger print scanners.

Motorists without proper documents and fake number plates besides motorists without number plates driving under the influence of alcohol were also checked. During this time, 32 cases were registered for drunken driving. Also, 29 vehicles were seized for not having the required number plates or for having fake number plates.

A total of 258 traffic violations were registered and a fine amount of Rs.1.3 lac was collected. Similarly, 44 cases were registered under the Cofta Act that pertains to the sale of tobacco and related products in 44 prohibited areas.

Similarly, a case was registered against 17 people who were drinking alcohol in public areas. 65 rowdy sheeters were unexpectedly checked by Udupi district police and their activities were monitored.

This special operation was launched by the Udupi district police to ensure that the public of Udupi district builds self-confidence about the police department, and that those who carry out such anti-social activities are vigilant and enforce the law.
