Bengaluru, Mar 25: Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood has allowed the grocery shops in the state to open round the clock to prevent people from getting inconvenienced amid the 21-day lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fight the spread of coronavirus.

The DGP tweeted, "For the convenience of citizens grocery shops and supermarkets seeking food articles can be open 24*7 all over the state. Cooperate with police by avoiding crowding.

He further said that patients requiring medical attention are allowed to and from the hospital without any need for curfew pass.

Earlier, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced a state-wide lockdown till March 31. So far, Karnataka has reported 33 positive cases, including one death.

Non-essential services were restricted during the lockdown. Essential services like hospital, clinics, pharmacies and grocery stores were opened for few hours to avoid any inconvenience to the people.

For the convenience of citizens grocery shops and supermarkets seeking food articles can be open 24*7 all over the state. Cooperate with police by avoiding crowding.

One who has brain and commonsense must see to peoples needs and issue order like this. Going out is a separate issue. But how the people can survive just sitting inside the home without consuming anything. For this, the Karnataka DGP has taken a appropriate step to provide grocery and other essential items knowing peoples survival problems. Hats Off to you sir.

I have no vehicle hence can't go to grocery shops now. I'm dependent on online shopping. But unfortunately it's stopped as delivery boys are not allowed to move around. Please do something about it. It will help many of us stay at home and maintain social distancing.

On the contrary, I see all food shops, vegetable shops are closed. Not even for 2 hours they are open. The less time they are open, the more crowd will be present. So yes it should be open for at least 12 hours. But alas, I hear police is forcefully closing the shops.
I feel we have two options
1. Go out and die with corona
2. Stay home and die out of hunger
I choose 1. What will you choose?

Do Mangalore Police report to DGP Praveen Sood or some one else. this morning at a supermarket when I told the cops on duty about the DGPs order, they said it applies only to Bangalore. Could the DGP please call Mangalore Police if they report to him.
24 hours maybe stressful for the supermarket staff as well as logistics. However, two 5 hour shifts in the morning and evening should be enough. Many hospital staff cannot go in the morning and shops are closed the night just now in Mangalore. AND social distancing should be maintained.

The list of Grocery Shops should include suppliers of Coffee Powder as well. Many people prefer to buy coffee powder from coffee powder suppliers rather than packed stuff from from super markets. Hence this may please be considered.

I and my family wants to leave to bangalore in our private vehicle from mangalore we have our house in bangalore and cannot have it closed for 21 days. Is it safe to travel now to bangalore from mangalore with this reason. Please suggest.

Thank God..some sense used at-last .people should be sensible and use their sense in what measures they should take.keep the distance very important..some people think that they have to lock down themselves in the house and not to work.keep working hard or else you will go mentally mad and physically paralyzed. try and clean every corner of your house,your society, etc.it is to time to clean the country instead of wasting time.but keep good distance.

To family , then to houses , to villages they should
Build fences or barricades so that no will enter
Or go out from and to the village, in the same way
Each toll plaza should be locked and restricted only
To emergency services.
If followed strictly, we can stop the spread of
The virus so called corona virus .
My humble request to the public at large pls
Sacrifice your needs, pleasures etc for these
21 days and the whole country will come out
Of this crisis.

During normal times the grocery shops open around 1000 am and close at 1000 pm. That is about 12 hours. Now you want to keep it open for 24 hours. Defies logic!!!!

DGP's move seems to be in the right direction., which will prevent panic buying, hoarding etc., and at the same time will provide all essential groceries to people of all walks of life.
However,
For the benefit of all, and to make the lock down a total success, I would suggest the following:

Grocery shops should be allowed to remain open only from early morning till 5 PM only.

This way, people will be to buy their daily essentials, with ease and without breaking the law.

This will also compel people to remain at home after 5 PM since Banks, and other essential services will also will be closed in the evening, which will translate into empty roads, and will require very little policing to do.

Dear Sir, Kindly arrange one responsible person to stand near shops to maintain distance and let limited people enter inside the market or stand by line with distance. There is no other option. If the grocery gets crowded then there is more chance of virus spread. Please decide wisely better and safer options. Little worst time by staying at home is better then more worst case. I am extremely worried for all Indians, extremely worried for those who don't have shelter :( , everyone be responsible to fight against the virus. May we all live safe. Jai Hind.

Dear sir, On complete lock down we can see polices are getting too much trouble.with 24/7 opening system how will be the situation? Educated person can follow safety rules. Many peoples behave casually.what we can do with them? Either every grocery shop has to be atleast 1 police or govt should plan diffrent straterly..otherwise no use of 21 days bundh...

I am not too sure if this is a good and wise decision. Notwithstanding the lockdown, a number of instances have been reported of people flouring the rules and moving around in public without any let or hindrance. It surely is a very painful thing to sit at home for 21 days. However, we should not lose of the fact that in the present circumstances, that remains our only bet to combat corona virus. If people move around freely, the whole purpose of this lockdown is defeated. All the pain we endure during this period would go down the drain if people do not confine themselves to their homes. How on earth are we going to arrest the spread of the disease? I am appreciative of the fact that people can't be deprived of essential commodities. However, allowing the people to move around freely on the pretext of buying groceries defeats the whole purpose. Instead, the government should initiate steps to get the groceries delivered to our door step which will obviate the necessity for people to go out of their houses.

At the last we have found a officer who is sensible and sensitive. This lock down would have created terrible social unrest had the state closed grocery shops. Let all grocery shops be open and let all supply chain of food items not affected. Let people only worry about the decease not the groceries

What game of hide and seek is this. DGP says 24 Hrs grocery is open and in Mangalore Nalin is saying something else. There is no coordation here and the people are made to suffer. In the Mangalore corporation limits let them issue a pass /letter for only one family member with the Adhar card number mentioned on it so that groceries can be bought. The pass/letter with Adhar card can be shown in case of physical checking. This will stop unnecessary persons on the road. This responsibility can be taken by the Corporators of MCC. Our people expert in fraud, so house numbers should be the criteria in order to avoid duplicate passes.

This is great news! But I'm so worried I might get thrashed by your colleagues?!! You've said open, you haven't mentioned anything about maintaining the social distancing bit? If you had it would mean we could go there if needed?! that seems to be a grey area? Probably cops can be at the bigger outlets to ensure the sanctity of social distancing is maintained by their sheer presence. Also too many conflicting versions, and I am utterly and thoroughly confused! And it is just day2!

But 24x 7 is not a good idea at all. 21 days lock down period. This decision will make situvation out of control. People will be on the road all the time.
Fix time like morning 6 to evening 5 pm. Then total curfew. Only emergency case like patients should be allowed.

Very good move. But in continuation I feel only one person from a family should be allowed to go n not in a group. Let all the other establishment be closed accept ATM. Some private organization work without the knowledge of Govt health officials, even they should be stopped. Meantime give importance to home delivery. I feel public announcement has to done throughout the day , informing the importance of being home. Some importance has to be given to daily wage labours, who depend only on that days income.

What you have mentioned is true. Our MP said today whole day essential shops will be open.. But, to my surprise when i went to get groceries all shops were shut down by 11only and very very few till 12. Now, according to DGP shops should remain open. Very good decision by DGP and if all govt officials including police follow only one statement and act accordingly, there wont be rush, gathering, groups etc. etc. Higer authorities issue statemens, here some responsible forces ask the essential shops to shut...all are confused and panicked more than the fear of corona. Give one order lets say follow what prime minister said and as per the full list issued by the home ministry today, all government officials should implement the same ...
