Puttur: Slander against church priest, Bishop - court orders criminal case

Puttur, Sep 14: A court here has directed Uppinangady police to file criminal case against some persons who have been accused of indulging in malicious campaign against former priest of St John Baptist Church at Kokkada, and Bishop of the diocese.

Some persons had levelled certain allegations against former priest of the church Fr Ronald Lobo, Bishop of Mangalore diocese Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, and parish council of the church. The names of the accused have been given as Jonson Gulbao from Ankadamajalu, Lawrence Madtha from Mandegundi, Molly Stella from Vodralke, Maxim Pinto from Miyala, E P Chacko from Kaukrady, Wilson Royal Lobo from Boladabail, and Richard Fernandes from Paddadka, it is said.

The persons named above have been accused of launching slanderous campaign through the media against the former priest of the church, parish council, and Bishop of the diocese. They also have been accused of threatening to lock the church. A complaint filed in the court had said that these acts of the accused have hurt the religious feelings of the people and damaged the reputation of the church.

Mangaluru-based advocate, P P Hegde, had appeared on behalf of the church and placed arguments.

    Why are these church leaders going for a criminal case? We all know what happens. Umpteen times people have to roam around courts and public humiliation when the lawyers of opposite side grill the complainants. Is accusing the priests of misusing some funds a serious offence.? There is no need for a criminal complaint since there is more harm than good. So, let those indulging in false propaganda be counselled and they should be made to publicly apologize for their misdemeanor.

    Dear Bishop & parish priest shame on both, remember 30 years ago a similar thing happened in Christ the king church Malleswaram, Bangalore result is, it became a big issue and snowballed in Kannada and Tamil language issue in the church.

    And it still continues now in the form of Konkani and Kannada language issue. The church closed for a long time an Archbishop Arokyaswamy transferred a Tamil priest defrocked for playing politics and finally Konkani priests injured.

    We never know how this will turn into. The clergy is for the laity(followers) and not vice versa.
    Mostly the clergy behaves like there is no one to question them and this is wrong.

    I request the clergy to behave or you people will be in the same place like it in Europe where churches are sold to become mosques or malls. Don't be misguided by some selfish legalistic people.

    This matter would have been best reconciled within the Church as the teachings of Jesus Christ emphasize reconciliation in our life. I have great respect for our Bishop of Mangalore who is a Shepherd of the Church, representing Jesus the Good Shepherd. Putting himself in the feet of Jesus, he should not have taken the matter to the court instead keep the flock together in prayers and reconciliation. In the Gospel of Mathew 18:15-17, Jesus says: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector".

    I totally with church. Forgive until last breath but sometime you have to forgive and also make the person realize of their fault before it gets too late. Once they realized it for sure forgive them otherwise it will be like mad dog biting every time. Communal goonda did it in the past for our churches in mlore and now another bunch of fake follower of christ try to do the same. Once these bunch of anti church realize their mistakes for sure priest and bishop will forgive them. Priesthood is not a easy to manage. They have sacrificed everything to serve the god. Why these bunch of unfaithfull create mess in our churches . Shame on you. Ego and power hungry idiots try to work hard to spoil christ name. Only god will decide your fate. I will pray for your wisdom to grow and serve like christ to society. Stop troubling priests and bishop and parishioners.

    I fully agree with you, we all should have faith in prayer / God. There is a lot of difference between just a lip prayer and praying form your heart.

    When our churches were attacked in 2008, message from concerned people should have passed to all the churches / parishioners in Mangalore Dioceses i.e. to kneel down and pray either at home or in church (depends on situation) till we were relieved . Unfortunately only worldly decisions were taken.

    @Christine mangalore,Praying is always good.But there are istances that the only prayers dont help and it should be openly cleared .what are the slander against catholic church and the priest should be openly discussed.I dont say who is innocent and who is a saint.We all are humans,when one make some changes ,others will misunderstand.There are people who only wait with a leaf and salt to spread it.Nowadays media is helping them.Church and its community is a thorn in eye for them we want to clear open.Just think what had happened in Bangalore, priest was killed by whoom.?many pro and contra.Now you can pray to be solved in peace and right.

    Jesus said If your brother makes mistakes go and tell him directly. Still he doesnt listern then take one or two witnesses with you and explain his mistake. Still if he doesnt listern leave him alone. You and your openent when on the way to court compromise with him . But what this news gives us the message . Are we are practicing according to our preaching. Very sad to hear such news. Still time is there. This matter can be settled amicably.

    Hello Ronald, very good teaching that you have picked up from the Bible. However, to interpret Holy Teaching, we need to learn about it first in depth, one can speak on one Word for days together. Half cooked Holy Scripture interpretation is the major cause of religious disasters today.

    Pastoral Mission is guided by religious scholars and I am sure, this decision has been taken after all the Sacramental and Religious Wisdom practices followed by the Church and its teaching.

    Administration is an intellectual exercise that stretches the brain and helps to take better decision in this world. We car hire intellectuals with the high moral qualities for the same.

    Spirituality is an exercise that stretches the heart, developing one’s capacity for a different kind of love. God is full of Love and Forgiveness.

    People who are devoted to spirituality and have taken oath, would be better continue with the oath till the death. This applies to all religion.

    Naveen Kulshekar, you are complaining that Priests have no time for people. May I ask you how much time do people give to Priests ? You will remember Priests only when you are in need of their help. Spare some time and visit the Priests and ask them about their welfare as they live alone. You are asking to forgive and forget. Does it applies to Priests only or to people as well ? If it applies to you also to forgive and forget, why you complain about priests ? You also forgive and forget. Why you or me couldn't be priest ? Remember, everyone can not be a priest doesn't matter how much you try, unless you are chosen by Jesus himself.     We believe those priests are in the place of Jesus Christ, if they filled the case against these people then they are totally wrong, then what is the meaning of forgiveness which Jesus Christ preached???     I just cant believe they have appointed one of the famous criminal lawyers in Mangalore to fight their case instead of looking for some senior catholic lawyers.

    If they are right then they should not go for such a expensive lawyer.

    There was a time when priests, along with doctors and teachers commanded respect and reverence from people from all walks of life. Times have changed now. Most of the doctors no longer have retained that respect due to the unethical practices they follow, teachers have started losing their respect and cases of priests following corrupt practices are on the rise. These are the people little children look up to and they should be role models for all to follow. Just as there is no smoke without fire, allegations may have their roots somewhere. I am not talking about the present case. This is a general statement.

    Thank GOD…. In this case none of the RSS or BJP or VHP or any other NGO or Association was not involved…. Else people would have bombarded in the name of NaMo too… Wrong to malign anyone if it is not correct…. But nothing wrong if it is wrong!!! In general….this kind of accusations are common for all especially if you act as Trustee, Managing of any religious works or function, Head of any religious place, etc, etc. So need to act and work carefully, honestly and most consciously too and then rest will leave it up to GOD because we can’t lock the mouth of people who talk rubbish

If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. And Luke 17:4 Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times returns to say, 'I repent,' you must forgive him." Forgive them and move on in life doing better things and leave blessed short life which is given by Almighty.

    we need to see this in all angles... Church authorities can also committ mistakes blunders ... there r also holy people... we can sense that deviation from the Christ teachings...
    It has money to buy good lawyers but where as they ???
    It also knows to silence the voices when their mistakes pointed out ... so finally, whoever committs mistake it's a mistake whether he is holy or sinner, rich or poor, any for that matter

    Some people apply Christ's Teaching on this very sensitive delicate issue. What the offended party
    doing here is Reason out with these people (who started this propaganda against honorable Clergy
    without any RHYME or REASON.
    Confronting them will escalate the situation - let the court hear both sides. The proof is in the pudding.
    General Public and all those involved NOW CAN TELL the Judge and let him/her decide. When the
    TRUTH comes out the guilty party must apologize and move on.
    Other scenario where ONE MUST SHOW the other CHEEK will not convince many doubting Thomases!
    Those who know the Bishop and the Priest(s) will tell you the work-load the clergy carries day in and
    day out.
    The court encounter will be peaceful and both parties will walk away convinced of the wrong-doing
    if any.
    I would love to see in this day and age ONE of US (any one for that matter) put up with slander and abuse yet show the other CHEEK!
    Some of us have a tendency to accuse DO-GOODERS of ulterior motives when there is NONE!
    May God GUIDE ALL INVOLVED and REWARD them WISDOM and COURAGE to be TRUTHFUL so we PRAY.
