Daijiworld's Appeal for Lavina Generates Rs 28 Lac

'Mangalore : Help for Lavina Crosses Record Rs 28 Lac

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 16: Even after acknowledgement, help in the form of financial assistance has been pouring into Lavina's account. Until Friday, September 14 the amount stood at Rs 28 Lacs.

This is for the first time that such an amount has been received by any single person for an appeal in the history of daijiworld. The appeal to help Lavina was published on daijiworld on September 3. The amount received within two weeks speaks volumes of the generosity and concern of daijiworld readers towards deserving humanitarian causes.

Several people have visited Wenlock hospital to provide moral support to Lavina.

We at daijiworld, would also like to acknowledge that over the past over 10 years, the total financial help received for our various appeals has crossed Rs 5.7 crore (For over 250 individuals or families) . Readers of daijiworld have helped the cause of the poor for housing, education and chiefly, medical needs.

Our efforts will continue with your support.

Daijiworld's Appeal for Lavina Generates Rs 19.38 Lac

People's Love has Given Me Hope to Live'

Mangalore, Sep 13: Yet another cause for helping a fellow human has generated unprecendented response on daijiworld.com, after the sad story of Lavina D'Souza was placed before its readers.

Within 7 days of publishing the appeal, a sum of Rs 19.38 lac gathered in Lavina's account, which has not only given courage to live but also reiterated her faith in people's generosity and love.

"I hardly had any hope as I always felt alone, and with this sickness, I had little hope for the future. Those lovely people have now given me hope to live... their love has proved that I am not alone in this world..." was her first reaction when she came know of the support and prayers received from people all around the world.

Once again, the beauty of the support was there was absolutely no barrier of caste, creed, religion, language or region. One can find names from all walks of life in the list of donors. It was a chorus of 'We are all there for you, Lavina'.

Daijiworld, Director - Operations, Melvyn Rodrigues who verified and intiated this case, has been closely following the progress with Lavina and the people concerned. The story was followed and done by Daijiworld correspondent Naveen Menezes.

Lavina D'Souza, a young woman of 21 years from Suratkal, had been operated at Wenlock hospital for brain tumour. Lavina, who lives with her younger brother Lancel, was abandoned by their father. Their mother passed away a couple of years ago.

Peter D'Souza, who was the ex-vice-president and secretary of Suratkal Church, parish council and the present council member, who has been helping Lavina financially with Rs 4,000 a month for the past two-and-a-half years, says, "Our world is full of good people. No one should lose hope to live when we have such wonderful people around us."  When Lavina's mother passed away Peter had collected around Rs 2 lac for this family and kept that amount in fixed deposits, of which the interest goes to the family regularly.

Lavina is at present recuperating at Wenlock hospital under the medication of Dr C K Ballal and Dr Diwakar Rao. These well-known surgeons from Mangalore have shown special interest in Lavina's treatment.

Lavina is getting radiation therapy 5 days a week at the Kasturba Medical College. She has to complete 30 days of therapy.  Dr Akshat from Padubidri who had visited Lavina has paid the entire expense for radio therapy, amounting to Rs 22,000. A family of a neighbouring patient and a family from Valencia have taken responsibility to take Lavina regularly to KMC for radio therapy and bring her back to Wenlock.

Upon reading the news in Daijiworld, people from Cascia, Valencia and neighbouring places have been visiting Lavina. "Many a time they bring food for her," says Peter,  "Now that the amount received is more than what was required, I leave it to daijiworld management and its readers to decide how to utilise this amount for the betterment of this family.  You can also decide to use this amount for some other cause," says Peter.

In the meantime, the Suratkal parish council under the leadership of its parish priest has taken steps to help this family financially in the future. But the extent of help depends on the amount they are able to gather.

A good samaritan from Doha had come forward to help Lavina to bear the costs for a full year. Now with the amount received from donors being enough, he may lend his support for other worthy causes.

We at daijiworld are overwhelmed by the support from our readers. The tremendous faith placed by the readers on daijiworld will surely help many more such cases. Though these days we get hundreds of appeals, we may not be able to put forward all of them before the readers. We are handling appeals based on seriousness and priority.

Once again a big salute to each and everyone who supported, contributed and prayed for the cause.

May God bless us all.

    Fri, Sep 14 2012

I thank almighty God for moving the hearts of so many people towards the cause of sister Lavina.

I also pray that Jesus will continue to be the lord of her life and her family and continue to keep her in good health until last breath.

May He bless her with great prosperity so that she too can reach out to those who are going thru the same situation like her.

Before sending my cheque, I had the previlage to talk to Mr.Peter D'Souza and I thank him for his pioneering support to Lavina, and Godwilling, also hope to meet him when i visit home.

Regarding the utilization of the funds, my humble request to all concerned is that :

    (A) All funds raised in the name of
    Lavina, be invested under her
name alone, which may be of
    help for her marriage, future
life, and yes, to reach out to
    people in need.

    (B) I think, the idea voiced by
    Roshan, M'Lore, (13.09.12) is
    worth considering, so that the
    funds are secured for Lavina's
    future needs, given the
    inflation, and other financial
    uncertainty looming over her
    life.

Once again, may God bless Lavina, her family members, wellwishers and those who helped her.

    May God bless Coastal Karnataka!!.

I am indeed very happy to see the overwhelming contribution towards Lavina's treatment. Thanks to Daijiworld, Director - Operations, Melvyn Rodrigues and Correspondent Naveen Menezes. Sincere thanks goes to Mr Peter who has been a good samaritan to Lavina and Lancel. It is very consoling to see there are so many good people around in this world. I am glad to know this love from everybody made Lavina to revive her hope. I pray and hope she recovers fully. I suggest the amount collected is utilised towards Lavina and Lancel for their education, (if they want to pursue post graduation), marriage, house and health. Perhaps somebody could help them to invest this money. Rs.19.38 may look like a huge amount but they would need this money in future. May god bless Lavina, Lancel and all those who extended their help financially, morally and emotionally.

Please Don't think this as big amount!
Consider the future- where she need further periodic checkups & medication & future of her & her brothers careers.
Keep unspent money as deposit & utilize it for their education, shelter which all are becoming expensive day by day with inflation.
After utilizing the interest monies from the deposit, let them donate it to other worthy cancer patients who doesn't get much attention they require though they deserve the attention of our society like Lavi.
Thanks all the donors, you have shown we are children of One God.

First of all thanx daiji to help Lavina. I would suggest she must meet a best Financial Planner to secure the capital & to draw monthly Income. My suggestion..

    1) Critical Health insurance of 5 Lac

    2) Pure Online Term Plan for 50 Lacs which w'd cost her around Rs. 1500/-

    3) Regular Income & Security of Capital - I would recommend her to put 10 Lac into a bank Fixed Deposit, with a monthly payout of interest she will start getting an income around 7000/- per month (before tax).

    4) 7 Lac into diversified long term Equity MF to generate a good corpus for future needs like marriage etc..

    5) 2.38 Lac as emergency fund in savings a/c. under Auto-Sweep facility in ur Savings Bank account & set 5000/- as threshold limit, any amount above this will automatically converted into Fixed Deposit.

Finally beware of ULIP Monthly Income Plans.

    Hope this will help.

But for DW this work would have been impossible. Journalists should follow DW in bringing the hearts together and blending them and not building the barriers between the communities. If journalism is done in its true spirit they can go far enough to build a healthy society and a healthy nation.
