Mangaluru, Jul 7: A complaint has been filed against creating a fake Whatsapp profile in the name of Prof P S Yedapadithaya, vice Chancellor of Mangalore University and sharing the same to his friends and asking them to buy the gift card with the intention of cheating.

The message was sent to several principals and colleagues of VC from Whatsapp profile number that ends with 153 and carried the photo of the VC. In the message, people were asked to buy an Amazon gift card and send.

A principal who got suspicious about the message brought the same to the notice of the VC. Then it was known that it was an attempt to con people. It is said that the fraudsters might have obtained the numbers of principals and colleagues from the university website.

It is usual to buy gift cards from Amazon and any other e-commerce company. Cyber fraudsters use this to buy any goods or services that they want from these gift vouchers.
