Mangaluru, May 22: Former Congress MLA Shakunthala Shetty in an exclusive interview programme 'countdown 2023' on Daijiworld TV, spoke on a number of issues and her political journey.

Excerpts:

DW: Now you are in Congress, but when you see the present situation of the BJP, do you feel that you must be in the BJP?

Shakunthala Shetty: No. Definitely not. To regret, the present BJP is not in that position. There is a lot of difference between the BJP then and now. The party stood on ideology then but now it is not in that position.

DW: There are rumors that Shakunthala Shetty will join the BJP? Is there any such chance?

Shakunthala Shetty: There are people who spread rumors but it is not necessary for me.

DW: Recently, a person was analysing that Shakunthala Shetty will join the BJP and contest from Mangaluru constituency(Ullal). If Shakunthala Shetty becomes a BJP candidate from Mangaluru constituency, it can be easily won.

Shakunthala Shetty: It is their imagination. They too have no courage to come to me. Even I too will not join them.

DW: Are you telling Narendra Modi is a puppet in the hands of corporations?

Shakunthala Shetty: Definitely yes.

DW: There are talks going on, that this time there is no ticket from Congress to Shakunthala Shetty but it will be given to Kavu Hemanath Shetty?

Shakunthala Shetty: The issue has been there from 30 years. Leave it. According to me, it is for me, according to Hemanath it is for him. Party will give tickets identifying their work.

    In my opinion, Shakku Akka's popularity came donw because of attitude (after winning the election in 2013). She was listening to someone who are from BJP / RSS background and trying to maintain a distance with the party karyakartha's. Apart from this, during the party meetings she also started praising local BJP leaders (who are more friendly with her), due to this she was not able to convert more votes towards her during last election. If she is in Congress today, its only because of Mr. Chandrahasa Shetty (President - Koti Chennayya Kambala - Puttur) who spoke with Vinay Kumar Sorake to ensure her entry into INC. She got an offer from Shobha Karandlaje to join and contest under KJP and also from JDS. "if I am contesting an election, only with Congress ticket. I dont contest as an Independent candidate. I want to become an MLA for one more time, then I will contest", these are Mrs. Shetty words in 2013 prior to the election.
