Governor let down Christians on anti-conversion law: Archbishop Machado

Bengaluru, May 18 (IANS): The Christian community in Karnataka on Wednesday reacted strongly to the move of Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot to give assent to the anti-conversion bill.

"The Christian community feels that it is let down by the Governor of Karnataka," Archbishop of Bengaluru and Karnataka Region Catholic Bishop's Council President, Dr Peter Machado said.

"The Karnataka Governor has given assent to the contemptuous Bill called 'Protection of Right to Religious Freedom" which is now a law. The entire Christian community across the state of Karnataka is deeply hurt and is disturbed that the Government has let down the Christian populace living in the state," he said.

The community "feels betrayed when its sentiments are not taken note of and its selfless services in the fields of education, healthcare and other social areas for the welfare of all the communities are not taken into consideration," he added.

"For the past couple of months, we were repeatedly drawing to the attention of the state government and general public that this said Bill was irrelevant and malicious, and it only aimed at dividing the Christians from other religious minorities," the Archbishop said.

"When we came to know that this Bill was sent to the Governor of Karnataka for his assent, our delegation had met him and made an earnest appeal to him not to give assent to the proposed Bill but, unfortunately, our request was not honoured and considered favorably by the Governor," he said.

He further stated that it is a well-known fact that the Christian community is always law-abiding and peace-loving, and it will pursue the options available to it to democratically ensure that this act will not come into force.

If Chritians are not into converting business, they should not worry about this law. If they worry about the law, this means they have interest in converting business which is wrong and this law is to take care of vested interests like this that goes handin hand with activities like social service. Religion is a personal matter and should not be a subject to propogate.

It shows Govt.desperate efforts to stop Good news of Lord Jesus in our Country. Gospel of Jesus brings social change hence people arround the world attracts towards it.In democracy there is no forced conversion. Popularity of Christian faith worries particular party for political purpose. Can BJP stop using calandar based on Lord Jesus? Most of Christian are law abiding citizens calm and peace loving they have also duty to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. What worried to Christians is it can be misused.

First of all, we Catholics where we have time to convert anyone to Christianity...!? We are so busy with celebrations like marriages, First Holy Communion, House warming & long list of occasions! We never miss a single reason for partying & spending lacs of Rupees! Busy thinking, when is the next feast or marriage in the family & preparing for them! We only complain, price of everything gone up like anything but we never think of spending & wasting, whenever occasion comes! Church Management is busy thinking their next celebration & feast and finding 'Mudthome for it ! Bishops have become so professional more than Spiritual, like never before! All these statements in the article, just to show their presence in the society! Our Hospitals, educational institutions have become money minded, selfless service in these institutions has died long ago! If you pay what they demand, they SERVE you, if not, get lost! Now converting anyone to Christianity has become a joke! (writing knowingly, you don't publish this because, truth tastes bitter to everyone!)

May the protection under His precious blood remain with you for ever. Let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest. So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.(Galatians 6:9-10}

Hence forth, in any Catholic organization like education, hospital etc, for all non-catholic a agreement to be signed that they will not file any complaint against Catholics about conversion. Only then offer admission to these non-catholic. Somewhere they should learn what is the impact of the letting down a community in society. Also, bring back all the non-catholics who are working in catholic countries, why they should enjoy their freedom and lavish life style, also bring back all hindu's from the gulf countries. Why not they are afraid of getting converted to Islam when they work in gulf? For luxury they need other countries to live and enjoy. But here in India they want to disturb the peace and unity. Shame on these RSS, BD etc who are strongly backed by the BJP and the leader of this BJP party who is holding high profile in our country. Even they depend on the non-catholic country for their luxury life like car, plane, suite etc. A true leader would have definitely spoken about the true issues that are hindering the progress of the coutnry and not into this religion based decisions.

Since most of the judges, governers, president, are owned by BJP. So we cannot expect any good things from them. Anyway this law will be misused and by force and power give tough time for minorities. Even we not doing conversion some one cane make false complaint to take the advantage of it. Anyway future is tough. It will effect not only minority but it will also effect majorities. Our Jesus suffered death on cross because he was preaching good things to the people and people used to follow him and converting. So the kings are afraid and crucified Jesus. But our christianity faith not died. It is still growing.

Yes, this bill will not affect in large to christian as it does not matter for us the numbers but the quality of christian who lives by HIS word and path. Which is service is first, If its a will of JESUS, then no power can stop for a conversion of heart , as christian i feel sad to say this but looking at current scenario we should support to our own followers first in charitable , social, economical growth.

The Governor has just done his job to keep his Constitutional Power Chair and as per the ruling dispensation at the State and Center. This is one of their project to divert public attention from real problems affecting the common people . Being a catholic, just wonder how many conversions into Catholic Church that have taken place in the recent years. Meanwhile many of our catholic girls have left the church with the marriage with other faiths. In the first place why do we need to convert some one into accepting Christ. Lord Jesus said, "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day". Therefore, if anyone wants to accept Lord Jesus Christ into his/her life, let them do so at their own will. Instead of worrying over this bill, the Church should look into the ways to protect our own followers and encourage our own families to grow in numbers as well as socially, politically and economically strong without depending on others.

Being a Roman catholic I don't see any issues due to this anti conversion law. Why someone should forcefully do it? There is no objection in the law if other party willingly converts as per the law. This is a problem only for those groups which have come out of Roman catholic and do the prayer service entire day and call other religion poor people for meet and convert them by showing money. The person who get converted remain as poor only and the converter will become paster and gets all money for his future...

They don't know whether they are Catholics or break away group and neither they want to know it.

All services including preaching will continue since it is guaranteed by the Constitution. Nobody converts anybody by force or enticement in the 21st century. In fact till date no case of forcible conversion has been proved. Anti-conversion law exists in Orissa since 1965. Fanatics tried their level best to implicate Australian missionary Graham Staines but in vain. Finally in 1999 those blood thirsty criminals burnt him and his two innocent sons alive. It was the most heinous and barbaric act in a civilised world. But the charitable activities initiated by him still continue with all zeal and vigour and most importantly supported by the tolerant and moderate people among the majority community.

Conversion will only happen when HE wills it and in HIS time. For only HE touches the hearts and minds of people, and once that happens no power on earth can stop it. Remember, for the first 350 years of Christianity, Christians were fed to hungry lions and despite of innumerable hardships and difficulties Christianity spread throughout the world that today it is undoubtedly the most dominant power on earth. All other Emperors, Military Rulers, Kings and Queens have come and gone, the Holy bible is the most read book, and Jesus Christ who came over 2000 years ago is still a Box Office Hit.

Who can wage war against it?” 5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months Revelation 14:10 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath...

It can be challenged as there's enough scope to prove that it was not all necessary to pass it in haste without a debate! Read what apex court had said in an old judgement:: "In the RC Cooper vs. Union of India case of 1970 the apex court held that an ordinance can be challenged on the ground that immediate action was not required and the same had been passed only to by-pass a debate and discussion in the legislature."

Praveen, just because i said so, govt passed the bill ? I know exactly what i write. If you remember clearly i wrote, when we do not do conversions, why we should worry about the bill ? This bill was expected since a few years. Many times, our delegation requested the government....did it listen ? They implemented the bill and now govt will understand who will convert ?? When we are saying we dont convert and our no. Is very little, why to worry ? Christians are not only minorities....there are other minorities too. Other religions are not converting? Or people do not get converted to whichever religion they want to convert? This bill is applicable to all. Why are you blaming me for expressing my view based on the points mentioned herein. Am i responsible for this bill ? Did you oppose this bill ? Then why the government did not listen to you. Forget you, even it didnt budge to our leaders...!! Stop accusing and pointing fingers at me....! Whats your contribution towards stopping this ? I wrote out of humanity and courtesy not to request and beg the governor or CM when we say we dont indulge in conversions...
