Saffron scarf vs Hijab row: College management to hold parents' meeting in Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 4 (IANS): The management of Balagadi First Grade College in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka has decided to hold a meeting with the parents in connection with a row over some students wearing hijab along with uniform.

The announcement was made after the students staged a protest in the college premises on Tuesday.

In retaliation to some students wearing hijab, another group of students have now started wearing saffron scarves and shawls to the college, triggering a row. The college had made national headlines three years ago for the same reason.

Some even boycotted classes for allowing some students to wear hijab. The students have claimed that uniform norms are being violated by some students who wear hijabs along with uniform. If they are allowed to wear hijabs, they must also be allowed to sport saffron scarf and shawls, they said.

The protesting students have been assured that the college management would conduct a meeting of parents on January 10 in connection with the issue. No outside forces, leaders or any organisation representatives will be allowed in the meeting.

The students have also been told that holiday will be declared on January 10 for the meeting and if the parents do not agree to the uniform norms, the students could come to college clad in dresses of their choice.

Three years ago, when the same issue turned into a controversy, a parents' meeting was held, in which a decision was taken hijabs, saffron shawls and scarfs should not be worn to the college.

But since last two months, some girl students have been coming to the college wearing hijabs.

The students also raised slogans against the college authorities for not allowing them to wear saffron shawls and scarves. Chikkamagaluru district is a stronghold of the BJP. The party's national general secretary and BJP MLA C.T. Ravi hails from this district.

We as indians need to learn to respect other religion. Dumb college kids using thier valuable time on silly matters. You can't blame a person from one religion. We all have small minded people who exist among us be it be Christianity, Muslim Or Hindu. Grow up you useless people... Invest your energy to spread peace not misunderstanding and fights. This bullshit is so cringy.

Sanghis are trying to convert schools as their akhada and terror center by misuing few students by paying them. |What is the harm if girls covers their body as modesty. Does these students and anti social elements need girls to come to school in bikini. If they want to see girls in bikini let them try at home. School is not for fashion. School is like a place of worship and everyone should respect themselves by wearing modest dress. If any girl wants to cover her head, what is wrong. Sanghis are trying to create disturbance in every field and now they are targeting school. Police should take hard action on these goondas and let everyone live peacefully. Today they are objecting head scarf and tomorrow they will object wearing full dress by girls . These unsocials elements do not want peace in society and bjp is supporting them. Its quite unfortunate.

It is really sad to hear, see and learn these developments in Educational Institutions. Where Education is the Religion, Institutions are places of only one Religion & that is imparting Education, why these new issues are cropping up yet again? Muslim Girls wearing a hijab is their religious custom that has been in practice for time immemorial. Any Educational Institution in the past had no issue with this practice, then why now? With due respect to our Hindu brothers, Orange scarf is not a religious practice, it is a political party colour & this has to be understood by those who are supporting orange colour scarfs. It is a wise decision by the college management to call for a meeting and we hope a positive outcome will prevail. Can we keep politics away from Education, this will impart impartial values in students and they will have a healthy upbringing. These kind of hatred statements and confronting religious practices is not at all healthy for Educational Institutions and for students. What values are we teaching our younger generation?

Educational Institutions must snatch unwanted color clothes and burn it daily. A separate incineration chamber can be set.Let us see how long can this trend continue? Children are sent to school to study, not to propagate religion.

all these makes us sad. i want to give an example, my school is a Christian school in Mangalore, well disciplined school during the time when student put maale for ayyappa swami shabarimale, nobody restricted them what to wear not to wear, all students used respect them, even hijab. still I believe its not a problem there, but it used to understand students and teach them to develop mutual respect and co operation. seriously this shows what students and teachers mentality has gone to. understand learn don't be fools. really we are sad.

I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU, BUT FIRST THE TEACHERS AND LECTURERS MUST WEAR UNIFORMS DAILY ACCORDING TO THEIR INSTITUTION RULES. NOW A DAYS TEACHERS AND LECTURERS WEARING LARGEST BRANDED DRESSES, AS IF THEY ARE GOING FOR FASHION SHOWS, THIS TYPES OF DRESSES TO GENTS AND LADIES TEACHERS MAKE STUDENTS TO DIVERT THEIR ATTENTION. SO FIRST FIGHT TO MAKE COMPULSORY UNIFORM FOR TEACHERS.

Uniforms are made for a reason,to feel a sense of equality. It's heartbreaking to see how young minds who are supposed to be educated and changed the world are poisoned, what's the use of all the education if you have to go there and act like the puppets of your uneducated politicians? Whoever it is and whichever community it is,the college should throw them all out and let only the ones who genuinely want to come and study. Remaining ones let them go to whichever political parties they want.
