Mangaluru, Oct 16: Electricity happens to be one of the most basic amenities that every household requires and is dependent for day-to-day activities and comfort. There are several instances where the public have raised their voices against MESCOM whenever there is power cut for even a minute. It is unfortunate that over 11 families have carried on with life without electricity for over 25 years in the city.

Eleven houses located at Tiruvail ward had no power supply for the last over 25 years until the local corporator, Hemalatha Raghu Salian, and her husband, Raghu Salian, stepped in to help them. The families were living in utter poverty and had no proper documents with them to get electricity connections to their houses.

Some years ago, during the election campaign, city corporator Hemalatha, noticed that 11 houses were staying without electricity for a very long time. She took up this issue on priority basis and assured electricity connection to these 11 houses irrespective of the result of the election. Hemalatha deposited Rs 10,000 each on behalf of these 11 families to get them electricity connection.

Kamala said, "I have been staying in this house for several years. I do not have any family. When our corporator visited my house during the election campaign I brought to her notice the fact that we do not have electricity. She promised to do the needful and helped us in getting electricity connections to our houses.”

Nishmitha explained that corporator Hemalatha Raghu Salian and her husband helped her in getting power connection to her house. "We belong to a very poor background, Raghu Salian even helped me in my education from PUC to degree by paying college fee," she added.

Corporator Hemalatha said, “I noticed that 11 houses had no electricity in my ward when I visited that area for election campaigning. It is a basic requirement for every house. So I assured them that electricity will be supplied to all houses irrespective of the outcome of the elections."
