Chikkamagaluru, Apr 15: An incident in which a minor from near Sringeri in the district was raped by a number of men, and several men on a single night on certain occasions, had been revealed two months back. An investigation revealed that the girl was raped for five months by 37 men. It also came to light that these rapes happened at the instance of the girl's mother.
All the 37 who raped the girl have since been arrested. For his laxity in probing the case, Sringeri police circle inspector, B M Siddaramaiah, was suspended. The investigation which was taken over by the assistant superintendent of police, Shruti, and the investigation is in its final stages. A charge sheet has been filed in the special POCSO court.
The victim's mother
The rapes, which happened in Gothavalli village, had come into the open with a lot of delay. On the basis of a statement filed by the aggrieved girl, district child welfare committee president, Subrahmanya, had filed complaint on January 30, 2021 through N G Raghavendra and Subrahmanya Sringeri CDPO, N G Ramachandra.
Initially the complaint had said that maternal aunt of the girl, Geetha, had helped the men to rape the girl from September 1, 2020 to January 27, 2021. Out of the accused the girl does not know 15 people. The case also echoed in the assembly. Congress leaders had taken the government to task in the assembly and Congress workers had held protests in front of Sringeri police station.
Initially, the aunt of the girl was projected as the main accused. But during the investigation it became clear that the lady in fact was the mother of the girl.
