Panaji: Goa Bans Sri Ram Sene in State

Press Trust of India

PANAJI, Mar 22: The Goa government on Saturday banned Sri Ram Sene (SRS) in the state.

"I have personally signed the file pertaining to the ban. We don't want such institutions in Goa which will spoil the state's harmony," home minister Ravi Naik told reporters on Saturday evening.

Naik had signed the file pertaining to the ban this morning.

The controversial outfit had stirred a hornet's nest in the state after its chief Pramod Mutalik warned to stop the pub culture in Goa.

The outfit had earlier in January stormed pubs in Mangalore. Mutalik in an interview to local media had termed Goa as the root cause of pub culture in the country.

Naik said everyone in the state is unanimous with the view that such outfits should not be encouraged. "If someone tries to open SRS branch in the state, we will arrest him," he said.

The Home Minister, who dared Mutalik to enter the state, had received support for his stand from various quarters including the BJP.

BJP leader Manohar Parrikar had termed SRS as bunch of criminals.

Good move by the Home Minister. But Goans beware, next the SRS will try and create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity amongst the Hindu community. They will fabricate a picture of a cultural attack on the mindset of the Hindus to justify the presence of the SRS. It has happened once before, it could happen again.

Mr Nagesh you need to read the factual history of GOA not the distorted one that you carry. GOA was never attacked/occupied by the British. Yes we know and admit that large scale forcible conversion was carried out but then what do you want to prove here. We know how to maintain the peace and harmony in our land and we will. You being an outsider perhaps wouldn't know that.

Hi maria, do not forget history.  Goa was peaceful before attack by Portugese & British. Christain missionaries destroyed Hindu temples & warned all Hindus to convert or leave Goa. if you want will send you the copy of history of goa. NOW YOU WANT PEACE. THIS IS NOTHING BUT GIVING MEDICINE TO DEAD BODY.

It's not that Goa is surviving mainly on Tourism and that SRS will harm the revenue. We don't want any disturbances among GOANS who have lived in harmony from the time GOA was born. It may be muslim, Hindu, Christain, any other religion we want to live in peace, love and harmony among our neighbours. I praise all political parties in GOA for this excellent move to ban this group not only this group even in future GOA will not tolerate any kind of rubbish from other state. GOA is God gifted place to its natives. WE LOVE OUR GOA.

Jesintha Dsouza, you have very limited knowledge about the gulf countries. In most of these countries pubs remain open till 3 am. Drinking or dancing is not a crime. Law and order is very stict. Nobody can act funny there. You have full freedom to enjoy your drink. Those who act and take law into hands are punihed, no escape!

It is good to hear that the Goa govt. has banned Sri Ram Sene. Its a valid decision considering the history of this goonda group. It is important to note that they have taken this decision based on the welfare of the larger peaceful nature of its citizens. In contrast in Karnataka you have inefficient so called leaders who have no vision or interest of the citizens.

For them narrow minded religious persecution politics is the way ahead it seems. However they fail to realise soon they will be out of power and will have plenty of time to sing bajans and regret their mistakes.

I don't understand why minority communities are supporting the drink and dance culture? And most of the supporters are working in the Gulf, where "drink & dance" is prohibited. They should note that crime rate in those countries are low, because of this prohibition. We were born in India and should respect the culture and tradition of this country.

Acharya to attend only inauguration functions and attend other various conventions because ever since he has become the home minister he is busy doing only this, He is good for nothing. Mr. Naik please explore the possibility of coming to Karnataka. If this is not possible then please give some leadership lessons to our minister.

After reading all the comments so far its clearly evident to me that most the people have welcomed the ban on SRS by Goa State Govt, except for one. This clearly shows that there are only a few in our society who are spoling the peaceful fabric of India & Mangalore in particular. If the peaceloving people of India get-to-gether we can wipe out these rotten minded people out and dump them in the garbage forever. If the Karnataka Govt had the will it too could have banned the SRS & nipped them at the bud to avoid further meanac by them.
