Goa Tourism faces tough season amid taxi woes, rising airfares

Panaji, Aug 12: Goa’s hospitality sector is bracing for a mixed tourist season, with expectations of a strong Independence Day weekend but subdued Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Industry leaders say rising airfares, competition from overseas destinations, and persistent taxi operator issues are discouraging visitors.

“We are positive about Independence Day but not Ganesh Chaturthi, as most families stay home for the festival,” said Jack Sukhija, President of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa.

Gaurish Dhond, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association, warned that “a few rogue taxi operators” charging exorbitant rates and resorting to intimidation have damaged Goa’s reputation. He urged the government to impose strict penalties, saying, “The message must be loud and clear.”

Flight fares reflect the pinch on domestic travellers. On August 14, tickets from Delhi to Goa touch Rs 13,514, Hyderabad Rs 7,325, Bengaluru Rs 11,883, and Kolkata Rs 13,541 — far above prices later in the month.

Travel planners say budget-friendly overseas trips are luring Indians away. “Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Colombo offer packages that match or beat Goa’s holiday costs,” said travel agent Vinayak Arlekar. For around Rs 50,000–53,000, travellers can enjoy a five-day international holiday, complete with flights, hotels, and daily expenses.

With many tourists choosing international getaways over Goa, hoteliers fear a quiet end to August. “If flying to Goa costs as much as flying to Malaysia or Sri Lanka, why will people come here?” Dhond asked, noting that many starred hotels have already slashed tariffs to attract guests.
