Mangaluru: Promotion through religious photos –Christian community angry at mobile shop

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Nov 25: To the surprise of many church goers at Milagres Church here, Poorvika Mobiles Private Limited, a mobile phones retail company, distributed handbills with photos of Jesus and Holy Family to promote their products.

The handbills were distributed after the 8 am Mass on Sunday, November 25.

The people who received these handbills were unhappy to see the pictures of Jesus and Holy Family for promotion of mobile phones. Many people among them have complained to Daijiworld.

As per details available, there were three groups who came to distribute the handbills after the 8 am Mass at Milagres Church. They were all told not to enter the church premises as usual. A business house, an NGO and mobile retailer Poorvika started distributing their handbills to the people returning from Mass outside the church gates. Poorvika Mobiles leaflets were in envelopes. So naturally people read the other handbills first. When they opened the envelopes from Poorvika later, they expressed their unhappiness and anger.

Many people have condemned the act of using religious photos for business promotion at the place of worship. “This is really bad. No religious sentiments should be used to attract people towards any shop,” one said.

Community leaders have urged the public not to patronize shops like Poorvika who use religion to get business. It is said the Church authorities and Catholic Sabha office bearers have been already contacted by some people to intervene in the matter.

“If they are allowed to distribute photos at church, they will do it at mosques and temples also in the future,” another said.

As per sources, a Christian association has planned to seek legal opinion to sue Poorvika Mobile Private Limited.

There are many film stars, models beaauty queens ets. Let the mobile shop use their photos instead of our christ and Holy Family etc. I dont think there is no necessity in putting and exhibiting religious photos to promote their business. its an foolish idea to do like this. there should be certain norms for publication of photos in the handbills.

Anwar .Please do not drag any political parties here. We do not want any parties cashing on this. Its better to work out a compromise formula and let the issue to a rest. The owner is a Christian, We know him . So within our community, we will discuss and close it.

Shop owner being a Christian if he has stooped to such behaviour in his business promotion then only God has to help him. Boycott his shop and let him come to his senses and seek forgiveness from God for his act.

In the past religious pictures were used for printing calendars under the name of respective shop names and people were accepting and hanging on the walls for checking the days and dates. Now such calendars are replaced with desk calendars.

yes sir u are right. We christians we fail in respecting things belongs to God and even persons belongs to God. Some of us use certain language towards persons who have been consecrated to God.I admire the Hindu community the way they treat and respect the people who are belonging to God.We have to learn from others.

Today God and religion has been brought out of sacredness. It says "Do not use the name of God in vain". However, looks like the reverence has been diminished. Instead of leading people towards Compassion, through the eyes of religion, we lead them towards anger and hatredness. How God can be pleased, when we bring tears in the eyes of our friends on the pretext of offering prayers??

Even i was a witness to receive the Envelop with a Photo frame of Jesus Christ. Promoting business is not wrong, reaching to this level is extremely bad, sad and hurting. Who ever is owner of this store he should understand the religious sentiments. I could read in comments some fools are justifying this act as Advertisement for Christianity!! my question is
Are you aware what kind of atmosphere is already created by fundamentalists in India?
Do we require this kind of publicity for Christianity or Jesus?
Will you display the photo frame at your house as table piece with Poorvika Logo and name on it?
Let there be some sense while expressing your views. Finally if a business house want to distribute religious articles let there be guidance from our Religious leaders. It should be done at a proper place and in a proper way. This piece of frame is cheapest one you cant keep nor you can throw away.
I appreciate Daiji for taking this issue on time.

I actually witnessed distribution going on inside the gates. They were even stopping vehicles for distribution. The security people take extra interest in vehicle movement inside the church compound ok. But they should also take care the entry points. The entry is blocked by auto rickshaws, beggars, buses, etc. If you go to a shopping centre, the security person tries to control the parking space outside on the road (which does not belong to the building owners) by telling vehicle owners how to park how to reverse etc.

Jesus is for everyone. Let this mobile shop use his picture. There are millions in the world who use GOD's name for their personal motives. This does not tarnish his image. Why a legal action ?. Please speak to the owner and convey the church's grievances. Be good christains. Please forgive and set an example.

Businesses, regardless of the owners' religious affinity, have used religious artefacts of other religious groups to promote business.

I don't think there is anything new in that.

So long as I can remember, businesses have printed calendars with pictures of other religious symbols.

Poorvika shouldn't do this. If they want to promote their products, they need to do it in a appropriate manner. This is indeed hurting d feelings of Christians. Just because we Christians doesn't voice out, it doesn't mean that we tolerate whatever is happening around us, specially things like this. Somebody should put a stop to this or take legal action against these people . Guys, please respect others and our religious sentiments.

I do not see a problem. People are just doing a job. Of course I may not agree to anyone marketing in Church premises without relevant permission. People have religious ring tones and I cannot see why we cannot patronise religious symbols or pictures of god(s) to market their products. You never know - there might more clarity with the phone reception with divine intervention. Marketing whether be it at a Church, Temples and/or Mosques or may be where there is a concert etc. - cannot understand why someone is making a fuss. Let us move on guys - stop the rape, help the poor / elderly, stop taking bribes etc etc. This way our country will prosper. Remember we all have a conscience and karma bites.
