Dehradun, Sep 5: The political controversy surrounding an alleged “purification” ritual following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s public meeting in Haldwani has escalated into a wider political debate over Dalit dignity, caste discrimination and constitutional values.

Kharge has written to senior BJP leader J P Nadda seeking registration of an FIR over the alleged incident and questioning why no action had been taken even 24 days after the event. He had earlier raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took up the matter at a press conference in New Delhi.

The Congress has continued to highlight the controversy, indicating that it does not intend to treat the episode as merely a local political dispute. The party is seeking to link it with broader questions of caste discrimination and social justice ahead of Assembly elections in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

The issue could carry particular political significance in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, where Dalit voters form a significant electoral bloc and could influence the outcome in several constituencies.

In his letter to Nadda, Kharge stressed that the controversy was not simply about an alleged personal insult to him or the Congress president's office. He said it concerned the sentiments of millions of people who continue to face social discrimination.

Kharge also invoked B R Ambedkar’s historic Maha Satyagraha, arguing that acts and symbols perceived as reinforcing caste discrimination should not be dismissed as isolated local incidents.

The BJP and people associated with the Haldwani programme have rejected the Congress's allegations. They have maintained that the stage was cleaned and a subsequent havan was conducted because the venue had become dirty, denying that the actions were linked to Kharge's caste.

The claims surrounding the incident remain contested as the political exchange between the Congress and BJP intensifies.

Rahul Gandhi's intervention further gave the controversy a national dimension. He demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensure registration of an FIR over the alleged purification ritual. An FIR was subsequently registered against Gandhi in Uttarakhand over his remarks, prompting the Congress to accuse the state government of political vendetta.

The Congress is now questioning why Gandhi was booked for raising the alleged incident while no case was registered over the purported act itself. The party believes the issue could help it challenge the BJP and the Uttarakhand government while reaching out to Dalit voters beyond the state.

The Congress has announced a major protest in Dehradun on September 7.

“This is much more than a political issue for the Congress; it is about dignity and equal rights for Dalits,” state Congress chief spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni said. “The Haldwani incident is not merely an insult to our national president but to the entire Dalit community. We will not tolerate it.”
