Olympics: Wrestler Sushil Kumar Wins Bronze Medal

Rediff

Beijing, Aug 20: Freestyle wrestler Sushil Kumar gave India its second medal in the on going Olympics when he defeated the Kazak opponent.

Earlier, Sushil Kumar lost to Ukrainian Andriy Stadnik on points after being pegged down 3-8 on technical points.

While the luck of the draw gave Sushil a bye in the first round, giving him a start straightaway in the quarterfinals, Standnik had to beat 2007 world no. 5 American Doug Schwab in the round of 16 to move further.

In the quarters, Stadnik, a former World Cup winner and 2006 World Championship bronze medallist, out-played the Indian. As Stadnik, quarterfinalist at the 2007 World Championships, moved into the final, all those who lost to him came through to the Repechage, which will decide the two bronze medallists.

In the Repechage first round, Sushil meets Schwab and their winner will meet Belarussian Albert Batyrov. Sushil will need to win a third bout after that to get himself a bronze.

Schwab was fifth at the last World Championships, where Sushil was seventh.

Coming through to the final from the other half of the category is Turkish wrestler Ramazan Shahin, who won the gold medal in the 2007 World Championships, besides claiming the first place in the 2008 European meet.

The Centre will have no words to swallow the way our team India as being performing at the Beijing Olympics in various events.First came the Gold in Rifle and this afternoon wrestling, another event left in Boxing at 18.45 lets hope another medal comes our way. My point of concern is that the Centre has to prepare the ground of high class training to the various different events, by way of getting the best equipment and training the sports personnel in India or abroad.

India cannot say that they do not have the funds today, lets hope our FM will induct a new heavy budget next year to the sports ministry. We have the talent in India in various fields, what we lack is support to the various sports events in men/women , let us not always point our finger at Cricket, sure Mr. Pawar the way he has given to the Gold Medal he will do so to the Medal winner in wrestling.

Let us hope that 2011 will be an event to cherish. Let me remind my fellow friends in India, What Boris Yelstin did to Tennis in his tenure, we all can see the fruits today, look at the number of Russians at any event numbers.....Sure if we go on the right path India will sure come on the world stage.

IT’S TIME TO RISE & SHINE, WHILE WE CONGRATULATE SUSHIL & ABHINAV FOR MAKING THE DREAM OF 1 BILLION INDIAN COME TRUE AFTER 8 DECADES.WE INDIANS ARE PROUD OF YOU. ITS HIGH TIME THE GOVERNMENT GIVES IMPORTANCE TO OTHER DECIPLINES RATHER THAN JUST GIVE SUPPORT TO CRICKET.CORPORATES CAN PROVIDE A HELPING HAND BY SUPPORTING OUR ATHLETES, PROVIDING WORLD CLASS TRAINING FACILITIES, EQUIPMENTS & FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO OUR UNSUNG HEROES.
