Udupi, Oct 4: A protest was organized here by the local residents of Padubidri on Wednesday, October 3 against the establishment of Suzlon Company which has plans to undertake production of spare parts for wind power generation.

The protestors halted the ground leveling work started by the company to put up a rehabilitation colony.

Around 11.63 acres of land have been provided to Suzlon Company near Abbedi in Padubidri Gram Panchayat limits by Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) for setting up the rehabilitation colony.

The leveling and deforestation for setting up of the company had already commenced three days ago. The project for leveling was given to Sai Developers, Udupi.

The protest was held because the works were taken up without seeking permission from the local Gram Panchayat and Forest Department, informed sources here. And according to them the company also failed to see the adverse effects of the project and how it would affect the locals.

However Suzlon Company officals Alim and Ashok Shetty speaking to reporters on a conciliatory note stated that the company, if required will take the permission of the local Panchayat.

Padubidri Gram Panchayat members were also present during the protest.
