Church of England consecrates first female bishop

London, Jan 26 (PTI): The Church of England today ended centuries of male domination with the consecration of its first woman bishop who described it as a "profound and remarkable moment".

The Reverend Libby Lane was ordained as the new Bishop of Stockport at York Minister, one of the largest cathedrals in northern Europe, amid opposition from traditionalists.

The 48-year-old described it as a "profound and remarkable moment" after the Church had formally adopted legislation in November 2014 to allow women bishops.

The consecration, or the process of being made holy, involved a two-hour service led by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, during which he and other bishops lay their hands on Lane and pray.

Sentamu tweeted that he was "thrilled" to be taking part.

"It is a remarkable thing that this happens to me, and people have been very supportive of me personally, but actually this is about a moment in the Church's history," Lane said.

"If my appointment encourages a single young girl to lift her eyes up a bit and to realise that she has capacity and potential, and that those around her don't need to dictate what is possible, then I would be really honoured," the new bishop added.

Her consecration comes more than 20 years after women became priests in the Church of England.

And it comes after the general synod gave the final seal of approval to the legislation on women bishops following its passage through Parliament last year.

After the change was approved, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that the Church was entering a "completely new phase of our existence".

But divisions still remain between Anglicans who feel the change is consistent with their faith and traditionalists who disagree.

Opponents of women bishops include some Church of England evangelicals who believe scripture requires male headship in the Church.

As per my opinion I don’t think that there is anything wrong in ordaining Priests. Pastors, Deacons, Alter-Girls and Disciples.

There were prophetesses in the Old and New Testaments, Why can’t the women priests and bishops be ordained in churches? God allowed several Prophetesses in the Holy Bible and when God allows why men should hinder from ordaining women as priesthood and bishops.

FOLLOWING ARE THE DETAILED PROPHETESSES, APOSTLES AND DISCIPLES:

MIRIAM: Exodus 15:20 Micah 6:4: Miriam, the sister of Aaron was a prophetess and one of the triad of leaders of Israel during the Exodus from Egypt.

DEBORAH : Judges 4:4-5: Deborah, a prophet-judge, headed the army of ancient Israel.

Huldah : 2 Kings 22:14 2 Chronicles 34:22 Huldah, a prophet, verified the authenticity of the "Book of the Law of the Lord given through Moses." She triggered a religious renewal.

NOADIAH: Nehemiah 6:14 Remember, O my God, all the evil things that Tobiah and Sanballat have done. And remember Noadiah the prophet and all the prophets like her who have tried to intimidate me.
PROPHET ISAIAH’S WIFE: Isaiah 8:3 And I went unto the prophetess and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.
ANNA: Luke 2:13 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity

Acts 9:36 The author of Luke referred to a female disciple by her Aramaic name Tabitha, who was also known by her Greek name Dorcas. She became sick had died Peter brought her back to life.
Philippians 4:2: Paul refers to two women, Euodia and Syntyche, as coworkers who were active evangelicals, spreading the gospel.

Romans 16:1: Paul refers to Phoebe as a minister (diakonos) of the church at Cenchrea. Some translations say deaconess others try to obscure her position by mistranslating it as "servant" or "helper".

Bible is a spiritual book of life to live life morally. As Jesus himself said when he was going against the Jewish laws that `Laws are made for man and not man for laws'. Scripture should help us to evolve and not get stuck in the literal meanings & age-old traditions. If we are all children of God, then `holiness & commitment to serve' should be the criteria.
We have seen the changes in Alter-Servers and Eucharistic ministry and we will see further changes.

The so called women right groups make life artificial by their fight for equality in every sphere of life. The reality is that man and woman are not equal but different. This simple truth is not understood by these people.

This is a welcome move by the Church of England and I feel that women should be allowed to take up leadership positions in any Church. This is a big step forward for everyone.

The brand 'feminism ' is all time high and going against traditional religious beliefs. ' what is written to be followed ' bible says but amending laws to satisfy neo feminazi setups and empowerment groups is against religious doctrine and will malign the originality of creation. The Man. ' Adam ' first creation of God and patriarchs and to disciples of Jesus , its only Men who have given absolute sovereign over missionary and religious works. Women on the other part have given much noble responsibilities like sisterhood. So why mess with divine books to satisfy human cults like ' feminist movements '!?
