Kasargod, Mar 13: A couple was found dead after allegedly hanging themselves at their house at Poyinachi in the Melparamba police station limits.

The deceased have been identified as Venugopalan Nair (55) and his wife Smita (45), residents of Poyinachi Paramba.

Their only son, M Shivanandan (19), an engineering student, had died two months ago after being hit by a train. It is learnt that the couple had been suffering from depression following his death.

On Friday, March 13 morning, the couple was found hanging inside their house.

Neighbours became suspicious when the house door was not opened even by 9 am. When they checked the house, the couple was found hanging inside a room.

Their son, M Shivanandan, who was a student of an engineering college in Mangaluru, had died on December 29 after being hit by a train during the Bekal Utsav.

It is said that Venugopalan Nair and Smita were mentally distressed after the untimely death of their only son. On Friday morning, both were found dead at their residence.

Venugopalan Nair had earlier been employed abroad and later ran a travel agency at Poyinachi.

Melparamba police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

Just as we visit a physician when we have a fever or a cold, we should also seek help from a counselor or psychologist when we experience depression or anxiety. Unfortunately, this is not yet the norm in India. Many people, including the highly educated, struggle in silence—sometimes with tragic consequences. The rising number of suicides among educated individuals is a deeply concerning trend that highlights the urgent need to change our attitudes toward mental health and seek help without stigma.

Child's death is the maximum and highest emotional pain for parents as per medical feild. No one can understand but parents. Only some professional counselling may help if relatives help parents.

Very sad to hear this.Of course when child dies get depressed. Still one must think may be it was Gods wish that it should happen so and bow our head to his wishes. Now it doesnt bring back him by suicide. They could adapt a child from Poor family and give him education .God would appriciate it more than taking own life.God gives life and he takes it too.We are only his weapons. However may God give them eternal rest and forgive for taking their life self.May join their son in Heaven .They could have taken some help from social worker or from church adviser.

Rita, if by your reasoning every tragedy is simply “God’s wish,” then what does that say about God? Does he wish for the world to suffer? If so, that makes Him cruel, playing with human lives like pawns. To tell grieving parents that their child’s death was “God’s will” is not comfort—it’s dismissal. People don’t need to be told to bow their heads to suffering; they need compassion, support, and real help. If God truly values life, then encouraging people to endure pain without questioning it contradicts that. By your logic, He allows unbearable grief and then punishes those who cannot bear it. That sounds less like divine love and more like cruelty. By the same logic, is he solely responsible for all the problems going on around the world?

I fully agree with you. God is the Giver of life, yet many people mistakenly portray Him as the cause of death and suffering. This is not necessarily the natural conclusion people would reach on their own; often it is what they have been taught by religious traditions that every tragedy is God’s will. The Holy Scriptures, however, present a very different picture. It shows that God deeply loves mankind and does not desire people to suffer. That said, it is truly heartbreaking to lose an only child who would have been there to care for his parents once he began to stand on his own feet. The suffering we see today is the result of human imperfection and the troubled conditions of this world, not because God takes pleasure in people’s pain. The Scriptures assure us that God cares for humanity and has promised a time when suffering and death will be removed.

Good logical statement, Let's put it this way - Every person is born with a lifespan of so many years though humans can live upto 80 years or more. We can assume their time has come to leave this world and a cause is just waiting to happen. When death is considered as a punishment rather than a new beginning some where it's designed by the creator. An act of desperation might have caused their and their son's untimely demises.

Appreciate your comforting words. One correction though. God is Life Himself and therefore receives every soul back to Himself. He never takes our Life Away. Its the thief who comes to steal kill and destroy.

Sad reality of not having counselling to come out of depression and living to serve others as their own sons/daughters thereby helping the society and being an example for any parents to come out of their grief. Present Times are hard for many to have multiple kids as joint family system has become extinct. People should have atleast 2 kids which might give them a reason to carry on despite these tragic incidents.
