Frankfurt down Hamburg, Berlin lose to Augsburg in Bundesliga

Berlin, Sep 29 (IANS): Frankfurt's Lucas Piazon secured his side a 2-1 win over struggling Hamburg while Augsburg's Paul Verhaegh converted a penalty to defeat Berlin, closing the sixth round of the German Bundesliga.

After a record 507 goalless minutes in the entire season, Hamburg scored their first goal of the season Sunday, reports Xinhua.

However, their only goal of the season was not enough as Piazon's free-kick goal wrapped up a late 2-1 victory.

Hamburg had more possession of the ball but failed to break the deadlock in the first half, instead Frankfurt scored the opener against the run of the game at the 44th minute.

Frankfurt's Makoto Hasebe initiated a fast break via Timothy Chandler, who crossed from the right wing into the path of Haris Seferovic, who had no problems to slot home from seven metres.

After the break, Hamburg started where they left off as they kept the pace to press the visitors into defence.

Nicolai Mueller rewarded Hamburg's effort when he equalised the scores in the 58th minute. Mueller made use of Lewis Holtby's square pass into the box to nutmeg Frankfurt's goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald.

However, Frankfurt fought back and stunned Hamburg with the winner in the dying minutes. Substitute Piazon, who was fielded five minutes earlier, shocked the hosts with a free-kick goal from 30 metres over the wall into the top right corner.

Elsewhere, Berlin suffered their third loss of the season whereas Augsburg earned their third win in six games.

Augsburg's Paul Verhaegh scored the only goal of the match following a controversial foul in the area, committed by goalkeeper Thomas Kraft, in the 27th minute.

Berlin lacked in offensive power to level the scores in an unspectacular game at Augsburg. With the defeat Berlin stay in 14th place while Augsburg rise to eighth.
