ICC suspends Ajmal for illegal action

Dubai, Sep 9 (PTI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) today suspended Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who is currently perched at the top of its ODI rankings, after his bowling action was found to be illegal following an independent analysis.

"The International Cricket Council today confirmed that an independent analysis has found the bowling action of Pakistan's off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to be illegal and, as such, the player has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect," the ICC said in a statement.

The analysis of the 36-year-old's action revealed that all his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.

"Saeed, who was reported after the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle last month, can apply a re-assessment after he has modified his bowling action in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions," the ICC statement read.

The analysis was performed on August 25 by the ICC's accredited team of Human Movement Specialists at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane.

Reported to match referee Andy Pycroft by on-field umpires Ben Oxenford and Ian Gould, Ajmal played the second match only to see his team lose the game and the series.

The venue and time of the analysis was decided in consultation with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Ajmal has played 35 Tests for Pakistan, grabbing 178 wickets. His ODI record stands at an impressive 183 wickets from 111 matches. His 63 T20 appearances have yielded 85 wickets.

He was first reported for a suspect action in 2009 -- his debut year -- but was cleared after tests at the University of Western Australia in Perth. The bowler was reported for his 'doosra'.

This time, the ICC changed its protocols for testing bowling actions reported by umpires and match referees and the tests were held in Brisbane.

Apparently, the change was made after too many bowlers were cleared by the biomechanics in Perth.

Ajmals doosra reported earlier for suspect action. What about Muralidharan, everyone tells he is a great bowler, his bowling action is also not very pleasant. Why ICC checks only Ajmal, there are many bowlers in international cricket with suspect/slingy action

Dear Roshan, Ajmal is having more than 15 degree hand bent while bowling. but malinga is 180 degree ryt. so ICC don't have any problem with 180 degree bent action

i was in similar kind of bowling action during my college days, but nobody had a guts to ban me at all! i was taking wickets like removing fruits from tree!! a terrible fast medium bowler on a worst pitch!!! now almost many years over since i have not been in picture. Ajmol don't worry, why not to try for left hand ball?

after almost 12 yrs of Ajmals international carrier ICC found that he is delivering with illegal action.

Now accordingly they have to change the match result also wherever he took more wickets.

I think conspiracy to destroy Asian teams as targeted ASif, Amar, Senanayake and now Ajmal

This is a result of ICC bending its own rules (by allowing Spinners to bend their arms by 15 degrees)to suit one bowler called Muralidharan. B.S. Bedi was spot on when he called (and still calls) him a "Chucker". What followed there after is for all to see. Every other spinner is bending his arm trying to bowl the doosra. Murali got away citing medical reasons and Ajmal is trying to fool ICC by using the same trick. Malinga being a pace bowler, this rule does not apply to him. He belongs to the 'Sling' bowlers category. Ajmal can still make a comeback by a re modified action. Lastly lets not forget that Harbhajan and Rajesh Chauhan from India too have been reported for 'suspect' action in the past.

Maalingas bowling action is still a mystery to me...Sorry for Ajmal, very talented spinner has to sit at home...Pakistan lost many talented bowlers and batsmen due to match fixing or illegal bowling action..Mohd Ameer and Asif were brilliant bowlers..Especially Ameer was a sensational bowler..Stylish Pak captain Salman Bhat fixed them in spot fixing at Lords..Finish..one ball..3 Wickets down !! Rawalpindi Express Akthar was also accused of illegal bowling action before..Anyway,Ajmal's verdict is a bad news to Pakistanis..

this rule of suspect bowling action is strange...as a Layman if you see Malinga bowl he is a clear chucker (considering the degree at which he delivers) than most other bowlers who have been called for this offence...

It was a known fact that he was chucking. Only thing was he was never caught.
Besides, the ICC should make a rule that no bowler should stop in his stride while actually going to bowl his delivery.

Asian spin bowlers are always targeted by the ICC including Greats like Muralidharan. Recently one more srilankan bowler senenayake was banned from international cricket too for suspected action. Asian spinners are nightmare for other cricket playing nations.
