Chemnitz eliminate Mainz in German Cup


Berlin, Aug 16 (IANS): Chemnitz caused a major upset defeating first division side Mainz 10-9 in a penalty shoot-out while Bayer Leverkusen crushed Waldalgesheim 6-0 in the first round of the German DFB Cup.

Third division side Chemnitz Friday put in a resilient performance against a wasteful Mainz to progress to next round of the German football tournament, reports Xinhua.

Mainz were well on their way after 49 minutes establishing a 2-0 lead thanks to Niki Zimling and Shinji Okazaki.

Mainz allowed Chemnitz to reduce the lead to 2-1 in the 50th minute and it took just another three minutes before Chemnitz made it 2-2.

Mainz recovered from their setback in the 73rd minute as Ja-Cheol Koo gave his side the lead again. However, his teammate Niko Bungert made it 3-3 with an own goal three minutes before the final whistle.

Chemnitz grabbed the lead for the first time in overtime when Markus Ziereis headed home in the 103rd minute. Their joy, however, was short-lived as Mainz levelled the scores just six minutes later through Bungert's header.

Both sides were not done with their scoring and Marco Kehl-Gomez gave Chemnitz the lead for the second time before Mainz's Johannes Geis made it all level once more.

Mainz lost the penalty shoot-out as Gonzalo Jara's shot was saved by Philipp Pentke. Chemnitz converted all their penalties to eliminate Mainz 10-9 from the German Cup.
