President greets people on Raksha Bandhan

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday greeted people on the eve of Raksha Bandhan and said "may the festival be an occasion for re-dedication to the well being of women, particularly the girl child".

In his message, Mukherjee extended his warm greetings and good wishes to all citizens here and abroad, and said: "The festival of Rakhi spreads harmony and celebrates brotherhood. Rakhi is a sacred thread of protection embellished with the affection of a sister for her brother. It symbolises the inseparable bond of love between brothers and sisters."

He added that the gesture is "not a mere ritual", but a "powerful act that obligates everyone to ensure the safety and security of women".
