US bombs militants as Pope sends envoy to support Iraqi Christians

Updated

Washington, Aug 8 (IANS): The US Friday launched targeted airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) in northern Iraq, as Pope Francis announced he would send an envoy to the Middle East country to express his proximity and solidarity with the people, especially Christians, who are enduring attacks from the Sunni jihadis.

"The mission really is to protect American personnel in Erbil and potentially even in and around Baghdad," Xinhua quoted Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby as saying at an emergency press briefing to announce the military action against the Sunni insurgent group.

"And this is an important point - to try to help Iraqi security forces as they go after this threat," Kirby added.

"This is a threat inside their country, to their people, to their sovereignty, and ultimately this is an Iraqi fight to fight."

Two laser-guided bombs were dropped by US fighter jets on the mobile artillery of the IS.

US President Barack Obama Thursday said he authorised airstrikes "if necessary" against IS militants, who have advanced into the Kurdish region of Iraq and seized the country's largest dam.

Tens of thousands of refugees have fled into the mountains, hoping to reach the Kurdish region in north Iraq, but were trapped because of militant activity between the mountain and the Kurdish area, and are running short on food and water.

The UN Security Council has condemned the Islamic insurgent group and expressed its "deep outrage" at the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis in the wake of the attacks.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis announced Friday that he will send Cardinal Fernando Filoni to northern Iraq to express his proximity and solidarity with the people, especially Christians, who are enduring attacks from Sunni jihadis, EFE quoted the Vatican press office as saying.

The former nuncio to Iraq and current prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples is set to arrive in Iraqi Kurdistan within the next few days, Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi said.

More than 120,000 Christians have fled to Kurdistan from their homes in the northern Iraqi towns of Qaraqosh and Telkif, which have fallen under the control of militants of the Islamic State (IS) Sunni extremist group.

Lombardi said it was too early to know whether the pontiff's envoy will visit those areas.

The IS has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria to create an Islamic caliphate and has warned Christians they should convert to Islam or leave.

In a statement, Francis urged the international community to put an end to this "humanitarian crisis and protect those threatened by violence".

"I ask all men and women of goodwill to join me in praying for Iraqi Christians and all vulnerable populations," Pope Francis posted Friday on his official Twitter account.

Police and the army, backed by tribesmen, Friday repulsed an attack by IS militants on a power station in the west of Anbar province, killing 25 jihadis, Mena news agency quoted a senior officer, Abdul Hakim Al-Jughaifi, as saying.

Iraq is in the midst of battling the IS militants, who have seized control of cities in the country's northwest.

The current conflict in Iraq has acquired strong sectarian overtones, with disputes between the Kurds, the Sunnis and the Shias.

The Shia-led government is struggling against the Sunni IS fighters, and other Sunni rebel groups.

You are totally wrong Mr Alex. As far as peace in Middle East concern, the whole European world and USA not intend to keep peace in this part of world for the sake of their luxurious life. Their interest is on the Middle East's "Black Gold". Tell me Mr Alex, if somebody occupied your house and let you and all of your family members are to homeless, then what would you do? let those occupier to stay in your home??! Dear moshu, Managalore,

Who are these ISIS???!!! Are they Iraqi's?!

All are from outside of the country in the name of their deity and religion they are in Iraq to invade with their rotten ideology to make Iraq a caliphate state there by butchering, oppressing, making the non-muslims a painful death for not converting to Islam.

You are having a inherited problem with USA and Israel that mindset should change. Palestinians were given a land from Israel. If more land is required ask the neighboring Egypt and they can give some land for your brotheren.

Now it is you have who has to open your eyes in Iraq. Sunnis from all over the world have infiltrated into Iraq for Islamization by force. This is 21st century and not 14th century.

In Russia and Pakistan case, you are right.
But now, we should weigh the situation and give our opinion.
In Kuwait war, U.S. was right. Attacked by Iraq, Kuwait had security tie up with U.S. U.S. warned Iraq to withdraw but Saddam defied.
Afghanistan war, because Osama bin Laden striked US and, then Afghan rulers sheltered Osama, U.S. had to strike them.
All have their own strategy, like we (India) supported Bangla Desh against Pakistan.
It was U.S. strategy to support Osama against Russia then, which back fired them now.

The problem the whole world is facing is the ideology of hate.

Presently, IS has formed a caliphate and are actively seeking recruits and raise money to carry out their divinely ordained mission. In each and every country on the planet there are armed groups than preach and actively recruit a steady stream of desperados who believe they are performing worship when practicing this ideology. Hence, when most people in the world abhor the violence perpetrated by this group of people, the perpetrators of this violence think exactly the other way around. They firmly believe that this is what is asked of them to do, and they are 100% correct and if anyone opposes them in anyway shape or form, then they are being wronged and they should deal against those people whom they fell are not only against them, but also against their beliefs.

The US bombs may kill a few of them, but it will not solve the problem, because more and more will come as there is no dearth for like minded people and their affiliates across the planet who are will “Kill and be Killed” because they have a strong theological base which they hold in highest esteem. In the past letters like this have not got published and those that scrape through get a lot of “Disagree”. Though US action will save some of their lives it is just a band aid solution to a massive problem that the people of world have not had a solution for many centuries. It will lie down low for sometime but it will resurface again and again as it has been for the past 1400 years.

The ONLY solution to the problem is the intelligentsia in the community is to do 2 important things.
    1. Take out all harmful and verses that incite hatred of other people.
    2. Teach children how to love and build a culture of life not death.

Pope did ask for peace in middle east. Prayed for peace in middle east. Ofcourse he did not send an army to fight.

However most middle east countries want no peace, they want war and fight with Israel, till the very end, which ever way it is.

The ideology of Palestinians is, as I previously make many children, of which one third for fighting with Israel, one third for help at home, other third as standby on both.

What Palestinians care of being killed either way, their ideology is going to heaven and given "Houris" as reward, isnt it. Look at the family of the killed persons, they cry for a while and the next day it is life as usual.

Nothing is going to change in middle east, unless the set ideology is changed in ones mind, where the children are taught to hate Jews from childhood both at home and school.

Those who talk about Israel was created on Palestinians land, should also talk about Pakistan which was created on Indian land, where majority Hindus had to run away because their Kings were muslims, eg, Sialkot and Gujranwala, while India was partitioned.

That is the fruit of the partition, same way as Kashmir where the King was Hari Singh, ruling over majority of 52% muslims. However now you see a different picture there, Hindu Pandits are forced to evict and move away.

Why dont you keep the same strategy for everyone, not the type of "one way street".

Israeli forces are hunting down Hamas terrorists. The Hezbollah have learned a lesson from Israel while the Hamas are yet to learn. Unfortunately innocent civilian Palestinian lives are lost in the conflict.

Palestinian lands are not forcibly occupied by Israelis. At least 90 percent of the private lands occupied today were purchased by the Israelis from the Palestinians who migrated to countries in the Gulf. Today a majority of these Palestinian migrants are well settled in Europe, U.S. and Canada. They are least bothered about Palestine.

If the same unity was shown for the cause of Humanity like they showed for Israel Gaza war, by now lots of life could already have been saved. People who understand Middle East politics know very well that this is altogather another ball game of politics. No cries for innocents bleeding to death in Iran because they are not fellowmen and their blood wont bleed red.I hope atleast better late than never, the blood shed stops.
