Mangalore: Auto drivers, hoteliers, hit hard by new traffic rule at Balmatta-Bendorewell

Mangalore, Jul 10: It's less than two weeks since the imposition of the new traffic rules between Balmatta Circle and Bendorewell junction, but the service auto drivers operating on the route are already lamenting that the new rule has halved their income as they are not getting enough passengers.

The scenario for shoppers and hoteliers on the route is no different. The traffic regulation in the area has forced the commuters to choose other destinations for shopping and eating out. According to Nassir, a hotelier, the vehicles which move out of the city - vehicles moving from Balmatta to Bendorewell choose to halt at his hotel but vehicles entering the city (Bendorewell-Balmatta) do not stop as they are keen on visiting other places.

Nassir contended that due to this, his profit has come down by 30 percent. Amidst growing prices of essential commodities, this fresh trouble has added to the worries of hoteliers and shop keepers.

The new rule has hit auto rickshaws serving the area hardest. Earlier, people used to board autos to commute from Balmatta to Kankanady, Kankanady to Bendorewell, and Bendorewell to Balmatta. The passengers were able to reach these locations at the minimum stipulated price of Rs 25. The current traffic rule has reduced the number of trips for the auto drivers drastically from 15-20 to 5-10 per day.

“Before the rule came into effect, most of the drivers managed to get as many as 15 - 20 trips a day. At present, people are not opting for autos as they are compelled to take a detour,” said Rajesh, an auto driver. Commuters are now opting to walk instead. He said that a large chunk of people, apart from auto drivers, working in the area in various sectors have signed the memorandum readied by the drivers. “The memorandum will be sent to the deputy commissioner, MLC, and the assistant commissioner of police requesting an end to the prevailing rule,” he said.

“In addition, pedestrians have been encountering problems while crossing the road. Due to the diversion of vehicular movement, the vehicle flow remains constant during the peak hours,” added Rajesh.

Uday N Kumar, ACP (Traffic), speaking to Daijiworld, said, “The response to the new model of traffic control in the area is good. Apart from drawing flak from about 10 percent of the people, the remaining 90 percent have lauded the idea that has been implemented. We will also consider the pleas of auto drivers and hoteliers in the coming days.” He asserted that as of now there won’t be any change in the rule.

the new model of traffic is very good and we have to keep going and we should not change this mode. there should not be any compromise to drivers who disobey the rule.Heavy fine should be applied and driving licence should be suspended for a month.Vehicle should be seized for a week.Suggestion : after 2000 lt the traffic department should keep a constable at bendoor well circle, near Bethany cross,Near Balmatta junction to stop Vehicles going on wrong side and also u have to fine heavily because it is dangerous for the drivers who are following the rules. Please do not take the police road barriers kept on these roads ,these are very useful to check the speed. The speed limit should be fixed at 30 KMPH because of schools, hospitals Residential area.
For rickshaws police department should fix a place for rickshaw stand / one near Kumars Intl. , One near Horticulture .
And the most important is that Public should cooperate with the police.

Hats off to the RTO, Police. the drive is just too good to be true. no tension and no going on 1st gear!

It is also very safe to drive now as there is no worry. For school children at Bethanys they have no fear as they are on the left side and can get into the bus. If Hotels are not having business, it is because they do not have ear marked parking for their building. All commercial complexes should have proper parking. Now people will realise the value of having parking in the building.

Good planning. we should have more of these.

I totally agree with observer.pedestrians are at God,s mercy with this new arrangement.when we come out of SCS we motorists have to be lucky to get out without being hit by the oncoming steady speeding traffic.in Hampankatta it was sensible to do away with signals..here it,s right only for speeding buses ,cars.those of us who live around these areas just find it chaotic.a signal in shoppin junction would make ppl wait but there would not be bottle neck.its dangerous to drive at nights on the new diversions..ppl come wrong side.disasters are waiting to happen.please revert back to original.if somebody is starting a petition against this foolish move..i,m in.will get a lot of Shivbag residents to join against this idiotic change which benefits the speeding maniacs.

The road connecting from Balmatta post office to Bendur should have been repaired and only then the one way idea should have come in force. The authorities should not allow the buses to be parked on roads even in the nights and clean them near the Balmatta post office. It looks like the RTO, traffic police, etc. are paid more than their salaries by the bus owners. The bus owners should park their buses in their houses not in public places.

The system now introduced has no doubt tackled the recurring traffic jam at Balmatta and Bendore Well, but it requires a lot of fine tuning. The present arrangement seems not to have taken into consideration the needs of the pedestrians who have no footpaths to walk on right down from Balmatta/Collector's Gate to Bendore Cross and up to Bendore Well. No doubt providing this facility is not the concern of the Traffic Police, but they could evince some concern for the pedestrians by strictly controlling the speed limit of the vehicular traffic, particularly that of buses the drivers of which appear to be psyched to drive on a racing track than on a public road. Suggest a speed limit be strictly imposed with heavy penalty who disregard it. Safe pedestrian crossings, specially at Bendore Cross, are also an urgent need.
Curious to know which route the DC takes on emerging at the Collector's Gate on way to his office from his bunglow! Does he set an example in following the new system by going to Bendore Cross-Well-Balmatta...?

Whatever income these autorickshaw drivers have been earning was by unethical means. They used to park their autorickshaws at will causing inconvenience to pedestrians and other vehicle users, for example, in front of Divya Deepa Arcade. So any reduction in their income shouldn’t be a cause of concern. These days autorickshaw parks mushroom faster than slums. The moment they find that a certain locality has many autorickshaw users, an auto park blooms. Moreover, many age-old auto parks are located at points that block the view of other road users, for example, the auto park in front of Dominos is a blind spot for vehicles coming from Shivabag road. But our autorickshaw drivers don't give a damn to this problem. Change is the only constant in life, and we have to adapt to the changing times. When changes are effected, there will be resistance and inconvenience for some time. But on the longer run, it is the convenience to pedestrians and road users that matters, not the inconvenience caused to the autorickshaw drivers.

The authorities, I am sure have considered all the aspects before imposing this rule.

However what is most important is providing good foot-paths for the pedestrians to walk.

It is felt that whereas attempts have made to provide good roads, foot-paths are badly neglected thus putting the lives of people in danger

Rickshaw drivers in South Kanara would always brag for everything. And, finally they get what they ask for.

One of the many examples is the objections raised by them for displaying their photo identity with vehicle details behind their seat. The authorities shelved the plan, while in same state, city like Bangalore one could see this little board hanging behind the seat of all Rickshaw drivers.

New traffic rule is introduced apparently in considering the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike and streamline the traffic flow. One should welcome the reforms and appreciate Mangalore traffic department's initiative.

Most of the people appreciate here are those who sit inside their cars and drive without any botheration of people who walk on these roads. In the first instance there are no foot paths from Balmatta to horticulture junction and from there to Bendurwell even worse. Vehicles comes close to the edge of the road and some time driving zigzag to overtake others hence causing pedestrians fear of life. This rule is just to favor motor vehicle owners

I stand against this. these auto drivers are the main contributors for the traffic problem at Mangalore. With the intention of getting more and more passengers, they drive havoc in the city. Anywhere they stop, anywhere they stop, driving is ridiculous..they think they are the road kings threatening everybody. they stand immediate next to the bus drivers. These people , with the intention os looking for passengers, drive like anything... all of sudden they take turn, all of sudden they stop seeing the passenger.
Any one ways, they think have the liberty to break it by going on other side. So, this must be a lesson to all those as there could be a day when they can be axed like this. There is also a major concern on the rate they charge. They charge on their wish ( not all, but many ). Especially railways station they charge havoc. no rules nothing. They need to learn a lot of lessons. Especially how to deal with customers or passengers. Some behave as if they are doing a great help or deal by letting the drive. they don't realise it's their break and butter. If no passengers, their life will be miserable. So, I would take this as an opportunity for them to realise all their mistakes and correct themselves. Traffic plans can not be chenaged , just to ensure auto drivers earn more.

Like Mumbai maximum number of autos in Mangalore run on CNG. If Mumbai auto drivers can afford minimum fare Rs 15 why cant Mangalore auto drivers? RTO< Police Department and
D.C.should look into the matter. Another problem with Mangalore auto drivers is that they refuse to take the passengers to some areas. If they go to Gorigudda they ask Rs.10 more. Why this sort of loot?
Nobody listens to the problems of the passengers. So nobody supports auto drivers in Mangalore.Because some of them are very rude with passengers. If anybody complains to the police they dont take any action against the auto drivers. So
no sympathy, no support to any auto drivers of Mangalore.

The diversion is an excellent idea by the Cops.Hope sense will prevail with our people and accept this one way rule. Actually we save more fuel and time rather than wait in jams and move bumper to bumper...Good Idea no looking back on this one.

Mangalore Junction(Kankanady) railway station very badly needs pre-paid auto rickshaws in order to stop the swindling of the passengers. Some of these auto drivers have spoiled the name of Mangalore, by charging 150%-200% fare during daytime. At night there is no limit for the fare. Some leaders are controlling the autos at Kankanady Railway station. Will MP Nalin Kumar Kateel,MLA J.R.Lobo and MLC Ivan D'Souza look into the matter and ask the concerned authorities to start pre-paid autos here.Hon Railway Minister Mr.Sadananda Gowda should take initiative at the earliest.

I personally feel instead of current arrangement, we should have done entire Falnir Road and Jyothi Road as One Way. May be Kankanady->Falnir->Statebank and Statebank->Jyothi(Downside Road)->Kankanady. Though it is a bigger stretch we have 3-4 Roads in between(Vaslane and 3 more near Athena) to link these one ways. The Bavuta gudde road should arrange for going to statebank for the vehicles via Bunts hostel. Here the problem is for only 27 Route no or like vehicles and Stretch from Hampankatta to statbank.I assume we can easily figure out well.

Another Main Concern here is we need remove all Parkings on the Road throughout these roads. In the name of Roadside, they are almost reaching middle of the road.

If rules are made for citizens benefit, then we need to follow. Follow the rules as they are, that is the best idea.

We have already spoiled our country by corrupting to get our work done becoz we hate to stand in lines and waste our time. So the rules favoured the one who had money and the poor suffered.

I appreciate if we have some strict rules in place to see a better tomorrow in India and the violators be punished with a heavy fine so that he should think twice again before breaking law. The current way of living leads us soon to another SOMALIA......if you wanna see good days in future follow the rules.
