Mangalore: Rainfall below normal this month - Paddy growers worried

Mangalore, Jun 25: They say, in Mangalore when it rains, it pours. Unfortunately though, the people of Dakshina Kannada are yet to witness the roaring majesty of the south west monsoon this time.

Despite the fact that June normally sees average rainfall, the amount of rain this time is scanty. Till Tuesday June 24, the district has only managed to receive 478.4mm of rainfall, which is way below the expected 728.1mm.

However, during the last monsoon, in the same month the district enjoyed 1228.1mm rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 977.2mm predicted by the Indian Metrological Department (IMD). The last monsoon brought smiles on the faces of farmers with 20% more rainfall.

This year, so far the district has had a 34% deficit in rainfall. This dip in the rainfall has also alarmed paddy growers who sow seeds at higher altitudes. "Had the density of rain remained the same across the district, paddy growers would have switched to short-term variety of crops instead of the long-term variety," said assistant director of department of agriculture Balchandra.

The growers are awaiting the arrival normal rainfall from the month of July. The department of agriculture is mulling to cover 33,000 hectares of land during this monsoon to increase the productivity of paddy. The district currently has sown seeds in 1,700 hectares - 827 hectares less compared to last season in this period, Balchandra added.

The direction of the wind that is moving from north-west is a cause for worry in the district. It is also predicted that the district till the end of this month is likely to reel under similar weather condition. "Had the direction of the wind been from south-west, the district would have received normal rain," said deputy director IMD, Bangalore B Puttana.

The El Nino effect is the prime reason for the change in the direction of the wind. The rise in the sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean stymies monsoon rains. This has also influenced the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada. He said, the IMD has predicted good rainfall in the month of July, which perhaps would bring some relief to the paddy growers in this region.

    Mr. John,
The rain pattern has changed was due to deforestation which happened but of course not after May 16th, so no point in blaming any govt. I'm not for any government party, but let me tell you no one can bribe nature for seasons it is only humans who are greedy.

It is not unusual at all to experience deficit rainfall in Dakshina Kannada District. In the a=absence of rainfall can any alternate ways be adapted to ensure that the crops do not fail?

In the face of such a grave situation there is a proposal to have ETTINA HOLE project and if this scheme is implemented the problems of the poor farmers will be multiplied.

Hope the Government comes to the aid of people to ensure that alternate systems are brought in to compensate for the shortfall in rains.

Why do you bring modi in this situation? What one person can do? Entire society is responsible for this kind of situation. You will start worrying when rice and wheat ticks 500 per kg next year. I will post some pics in the readers column, how the drought affected rice crops (in our area) this year. You will understand the facts then. Thanks.

Our meteorology department is very accurate is much ahead of its western counterparts. In other countries they are not so good at weather forecast - so they predict it ten days in advance, whereas our weather is so accurate, they tell you at that instant whether it is raining or not. They don't take chances by forecasting one week in advance :) - (they are totally way off with their forecast)

NO RAIN BECAUSE OF CONSTRUCTIONS ALL OVER MANGALORE. Mangalore has lost it already. If we want to save Mangalore we need to stop new constructions. Builders are greedy and they don't care about Mangalore. The licensing authorities are also greedy and they too don't think of the long term effects of this building binge. The common people, majority, suffer because of this. Lot of people from out of Mangalore have settled in and this is creating havoc in all areas traffic, garbage, pollution, accidents, uncivil behavior, and everything you can think of in between. This was once a peaceful small town with ample resources. What is happening? Is everyone sleeping?

Last month they were estimating 95% rain fall(5% below normal). Now it seems that estimation turns out to be just to console people. Just tell truth that this time no much rain.
