Vani takes sole lead in women's golf


Gurgaon, March 13 (IANS): Continuing her good form, Delhi's Vani Kapoor raced to take the sole lead after Round 2 of the fifth leg of the Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the Classic Golf Resort here Thursday.

Overnight joint leader Vani played a steady par 72 to take the lead, two shots clear of Shweta Galande. Ankita Tiwana, who was joint first after Day 1, slipped to fifth after a dismal 7 over 79.

Vani returned with the only par score of the day. After a not so impressive front nine, where she conceded two bogeys on the fifth and ninth, she made her way back with a strong performance in the back nine, putting two birdies on the 11th and 18th holes. She finished with a total score of 142.

Shweta, who had finished tied third after Day 1, played a steady one over 73 and ended in second with a total score of 144. She carded four birdies on the fourth, 12th, 13th and 15th holes but also had six bogeys on the first, fifth, sixth, eighth, 14th and 16th holes.

Vaishavi Sinha retained her third spot with a score of two over 74 and a total of 145. Lying fourth is Saaniya Sharma, who returned with two over 74 and a total score of 146.

Ankita, the overnight joint leader, couldn’t sustain her good form and gave away the early advantage to finish fifth with 149. Amateur Amandeep Drall finished with 153.

The Rs.5 lakh event is the fifth in the series of 14 this year.
