Mangalore can be the next IT hub - S R Patil

Mangalore, Aug 31: "Bangalore has developed as the second largest technology cluster in the world. It is the home for 3,200 IT companies with approximately 8 lac professionals, which is 1/3 country's strength. Similarly, Mangalore has the potential to become an IT hub and due importance will be provided by the state government," said state IT minister S R Patil.

He addressed the gathering during a conference on the future of IT and electronics organized by BangaloreITE.biz in association with STPI at Ocean Pearl here on Friday August 30.

Patil further said, "I am sure two and three tier cities will witness IT growth in the coming years. Special attention will be given to cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli, Dharwad, Bangalore and Tumkur.

"Sufficient funds will be provided and all necessary steps will be taken to improve the IT sector in these districts. Central government has given the green signal to set up ITI in Kempegowda next to the international airport in 10,500 acres of land. The centre will create employment for 40 lac people," he added.

"IT business is a pollution-free business as compared to other industries. In one acre of land 700-800 people can be emoloyed, but it is not so in case of other industries. Hence, entrepreneurs and other businessmen should look to set up their business in 2 or 3 tier cities," he said.

Ramanath Rai in his address said, "Next to Bangalore, our city (Mangalore) has more potential in terms of IT sector growth. Earlier, it was a dream for us but now it is a reality. We have all facilities including connectivity like port, railways and airport which wil help us in the smooth operation of this sector. I wish that Mangalore becomes an IT hub as soon as possible."

Minister for fisheries and youth affairs, Abhaychandra Jain said, "Bangalore is a well-known name in the whole world in the IT sector and it has produced good IT professionals. Even Mangalore is climbing up the ladder in this field and youth must be encouraged to avail this opportunity."

Krish Gopalkrishnan, co-founder and executive vice-chairman of Infosys, N Prakash, deputy commissioner, P K Das director of STPI Bangalore, Mohammed Amin, president of KCCI among others were present

Nothing will happen. IT never succeed outside Bangalore. Tired of hearing same tune. These tunes were played way back 15 years. Nothing happened. Even lands which were sold at Ganjimutt/Konaje are eating dust.

Please dont spoil Mangalore. Dont make it as Bangalore or any other IT dominated cities. Crime theft rape increases coz of this. Release funds to improve roads and other basic things. Not by giving rice at 1 rupee to BPL and increasing rice from 20 to 35 for Non BPL.

@Kunte, bro, otherwise too in the absence of any positives as compared to other similar destinations the rates were already too high and had no justification whatsoever!!

See the big negatives: lack of basic infrastructure, loss of green cover, water/power problems, moral policing, communally sensitive, humid climate, inflation on lines with Metros, total lack of good job opportunities!!

Now the real buying by end users is on with maximum demand for 1BHK flats! Speculators and investors who pumped their spare money in buying flats costing crores are stuck up with their investments!! With the overall destruction of the Indian economy, job uncertainty, and uncontrolled inflation there should be a big time wise lull and correction in the realty markets out here!!!

I do not think that Mangalore will be the next hub for Information and Technology.A series of high-profile withdrawals of foreign investment across several industries this week have highlighted growing frustration with the Indian government over weak public policy as the economy slows. With the Indian economy growing at its slowest pace in a decade, Indian companies in search of growth are considering stepped-up investment in the US. A sharply weaker rupee, which touched a record low of Rs 68.82 per dollar on Wednesday, is also forcing Indian companies to try and boost dollar earnings.
India has put forth two conditions for a bilateral investment treaty with the United States, insisting that its judiciary has the last word on commercial disputes and that its sovereign guarantees are not invoked in such cases.

The conditions reflect the concerns of the government even as it seeks to build on the overarching principles of bilateral investment agreements, a senior official told ET, adding that the move is part of the Center's overdrive to draw foreign investments in a bid to restore growth and correct the fragile current account deficit.
The US industry has been vocal about its complaints on these issues and has said that these policies have led to deterioration of the investment climate in India, making it difficult for US companies to do business in India.
Analysts say many foreign companies still view India as an attractive market over the long term, given its large population and growth potential. But because of the lack of clarity on regulations, they are now more cautious about making fresh investments. "They are going to wait and watch as to whether there are any regulatory changes coming on the ground.

One more excuse for Real Estate Cartel of Kudla to jack up the price artificially and loot NRI investors.
But as it is, now 40% of the flats already constructed in Mangalore & Udupi have no takers.
Opposition to SEZ & Niddodi Power has already driven away the Investors.

It is a very good idea to set up an IT hub and lure biggies of IT here and the rest will follow creating excellent job opportunities however, what special do we have to offer than the competitors like Pune, Indore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Gurgaon etc. is the moot question!!

Secondly with the passing of the stringent land acquisition bill acquiring large tracts of land will be a very tough proposition from hereon!!

Another point to be noted is, many second and third rung and smaller cos. in the IT sector are dubious and after a few years of operation just make the vanishing act after getting land and other benefits!!

    Lets hope for the best!!

S.R. Patil due you know that your above statement has given one more opportunity for the Mangalore Real Estate Hawks to suddenly raise the cost of Properties and fleece the gullible NRIs by referring to your statement ? Do you know that even though Mangalore is one-tenth of Bangalore in size still the real estates rates in Mangalore is more than Bangalore ?

You are very right, realty cartel will further increase the prices citing this proposed development, but the fact is there is heavy inventory overhang and the demand has fallen drastically except for end users in the 1 BHK category!!! Speculators and investors are trapped with no customers!!!

We have been hearing this kind of statements from last 15 years. But nothing has moved in Mangalore. I am 100% sure that nothing is going to happen in Mangalore for IT in next 25 years because Mangalore is the last resort for vested interests based in Bangalore. So, my request to our elected reps is that it is ok even if no IT projects are brought to Mangalore, but please don't bring environment hazard projects such as UPCL and the one at Niddodi.

Mr.Patil sir it is good to hear the next step will be mangalore IT sector it is just saying or action will be taken to implement.I feel that ITI should have taken up at niddodi instead of Thermal power project which can be taken at barren land where development is required.

When they are in Mangalore, they make such statements to please the local people. Once they go back to Bangalore everything is forgotten. All pollution free industries like IT BT are reserved for Bangalore and adjacent places. Industries like UPCL and Niddodi etc are given to our Karavali and again power is given to Bangalore.

Mangalore is the right place to be developed as an IT hub. We have all the infrastructure and talents available. These days a large no. of our youngsters are migrating to Bangalore, Pune in search of IT jobs. A few leading companies have made their presence here, but a lot more should come in.

IT sector can shine more, if it supports surface transport sector (instead of fully concentrating on Telecom sector, which is already on sky high progress) which is suffering from severe problems, being on a lengthy evolution with slow and steady style. A revolutionary change with a new concept in automobiles can make a world of difference. The opportunity is to save more than 70% of fuel consumption (billions of dollars), eliminate pollutions, reduce costs (manufacturing, running and maintenance costs of vehicles) and multiply capacities of existing vehicles.

I totally agree with Ramesh Patil. These ministers once in a while visit our city and talk about development. In reality it is a very slow procedure and all the educated have to leave this city in search of good jobs. Will any minister ever do anything for the betterment of our city? Time will tell.

Do you actually provide the better facility for the IT companies? It sounds like joke, the road connectivity to Infosys is worst, not yet upgraded to two lane from Tokottu to Mudipu. Same thing for the one of the largest IT company of Mangalore, Diya Systems in Maryhill, there are more than 1000 employees works over there. The road from Maryhill to the office is very bad, narrow road and not properly maintained, just in seminar or in these kind of meetings you say, Govt. providing better facilities, but in reality no one cares.
