Pakistani prisoner attacked in Jammu jail, in coma

Jammu, May 3 (IANS): A Pakistani prisoner was critically injured when he was attacked by a fellow prisoner in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail here, police said Friday, a day after Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died after being attacked in Lahore.

Sanaullah, a resident of Sialkot, was attacked by former Indian Army soldier Vinod Kumar, convicted for murder, following an altercation Friday morning, a police officer said.

He received serious head injuries and was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, where doctors said he had slipped into a coma, much like Sarabjit Singh who was attacked in a Lahore jail April 26 and died Thursday.

"He has suffered serious head injuries and is in a coma. He has been admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and we are planning surgery on him as early as possible," a doctor at the hospital said.

The administration has readied stand-by arrangements to shift Sanaullah for specialised treatment outside Jammu and Kashmir "if required", an official said

Jail sources said Sanaullah had been in the Kot Bhalwal Jail for the last 17 years. He has been booked in eight cases, including murder, and been given life imprisonment in two.

Vinod Kumar belongs to Uttarakhand and has been in Kot Bhalwal for six years. He is undergoing life imprisonment for murdering his colleague in Leh.

According to sources, both were brought to the jail grounds Friday as was routine. "They were all talking to each other when all of sudden some altercation took place between the two and Vinod Kumar hit Sanaullah on the head."

Officials are trying ascertain whether Sanaullah was attacked with bricks or a shovel handle.

The state administration has tightened security in all the 14 jails in Jammu and Kashmir where about 80 Pakistani prisoners are lodged.

Pakistan seeks consular access to injured prisoner
New Delhi, May 3 (IANS):
Pakistan Friday expressed serious concern over the attack on a Pakistani prisoner in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu and sought immediate consular access to him.

"Pakistan High Commission has taken up with the ministry of external affairs the attack on Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in Kot Bhalwal in Jammu," said a statement.

"Pakistan High Commission has asked for detailed information of the incident, immediate consular access, medical facilities for the victim and security of inmates (other Pakistani prisoners)," it added.

Police said Sanaullah was being tried for murder since the late 1990s for carrying out acts of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Public anger is justified in India giving the present situation of Sarabjit Singh's death due to a "Barbaric Murder Attempt" in a isolated prison cell in-spite of having a threat to life in Pakistani Jail.

However no one has the right to attack on a human being whether he/she is a prisoner or not even for that matter in India!!!.

"India" cannot be compared to "Pakistan" at all in this current "tit for tat" incident.

Let's not pass any untoward comments because only Sarabjit Singh's close family members knew what pain they were going through from last 19 years and how honest he was and see now the fate for his honesty.

This current revenge(some sort of) will add only some more oil to the fire of hatred.

"Sarabjit Singh's case is totally condemnable!!! because nothing much has happened at the "Government Level" of both these Countries.

Violence begets more violence. Revenge by violence will only perpetuate the cycle of violence. Having said that I dont believe sitting across the table will ever work with a Rogue state like Pakistan.
India needs to deal with them very, very firmly but how is for our experts to come up with ways and believe me there are ways.
India should never trust their word but base our response only on Pakistan's actions.

Clear Indication of boiling blood of Indians against the brutal murder of Indian Hero Sarabjit Singh. However, our Govt. will not learn any lesson from this, instead they will roll red carpet for the pakistani delegates coming to meet the prisoner in coma.

    He was an Indian Soldier-
They are taught to fight when challenged & not runaway or turn the other cheek.
When a Paki taunts naturally he gave back & when he was attacked he might have retaliated without thinking. Rest is history now.
In Sarabjith's case, he had repeatedly written letters & had told his family that he was threatened, but nobody listened to him, he was attacked inside the prison & this one outside prison where they work with instruments.
Never compare or equate two different situations.
Sarabjith was a martyr who was attacked by 6 or more with active support of prison authorities.

It is a meaningless tit for tat. We should not stoop so low. When we were telling Pak that they should have given protection to Indian prisoners in Pak jail, what did we done? We have lost face and dignity in the eyes of the world. Who ever is the cause for such crime must be dealt with and brought to justice at the earliest. Otherwise there will not be any diference between Pak and India. Taking revenge by inflicting physical harm on helpless individual without legal sanction is barbaric and inhuman.

Now Pakistan will claim that India is not better than Pak in Human Rights record. Two mistakes by two opposite parties will cancel each other. Attacking Pak prisoner in Indian Jail will give Pak Ruling party an opportunity to defend its wrong doing in front of Pak voters in their ensuing election.

Pakistan has 500 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails and around 200 Pakistani prisoners have been jailed in Indian prisons. If such subsequent retaliation has taken place at regular basis. India has to suffer a lot. The media need to restrain airing provocations which can be politicized by the oppositions in the govt and later hatred among the common Indians triggers more instabilities.
