Beltangady/Brahmavar, Sep 2: Leopards that had been creating concern among residents in Savanalur of Beltangady taluk and Achladi near Brahmavar were trapped in cages placed by the Forest Department, bringing relief to local villagers.
In Savanalur village, a leopard was trapped in a cage placed near the house of Balakrishna Naik at Hannadiphalke on Tuesday. The Forest Department had installed the cage after receiving information from local residents that a leopard had been moving around the area for the past few months. The leopard was found trapped in the cage on September 1, following which Forest Department personnel reached the spot and took it into their custody.
Aladankady branch deputy range forest officer Hariprasad, forest guard Manjunath B S, forest watchers Venkappa Naik and Poovappa Naik, along with local residents, participated in the operation.
The captured leopard is estimated to be around two years old and is in good health. Venur range forest officer Bharat U G said that the leopard will be released into a protected forest after a health examination by a veterinary doctor from the Forest Department.
Meanwhile, in Achladi near Brahmavar, another leopard that had created panic in the area for the past few days was trapped in a cage set up by the Forest Department.
There had been growing fear among villagers that the leopard could attack domestic animals in the village. As evening approached, people were also afraid to step out of their homes. Based on requests and complaints from villagers, Forest Department officials identified a key location where the leopard was frequently moving and installed a cage there.
On Tuesday morning, the leopard fell into the cage. After receiving information about the incident, Forest Department personnel reached the spot and took the leopard into their custody.
Forest Department officials said the captured leopard will undergo a medical examination and will subsequently be safely released into a dense forest area.
